Breaking: Barcelona icon Gerard Pique announces retirement

After falling out of Xavi Hernandez's favor, the Barcelona great announced he will retire at the age of 35 as Barcelona's last home game against Almeria will be his last professional appearance.

Gerard Pique

announced his international retirement following the 2018 World Cup in Russia and has not played for Spain. Despite being included in Luis Enrique’s 55-man shortlist for the World Cup, the Spanish defender announces he will retire from playing after his contract with

Barcelona

comes to an end this summer as the Catalan giants made it clear they don’t want to extend the 35-year-old defender’s contract after serving the club’s senior side for more than 13 seasons.

Barcelona plans to reduce their expenses as much as possible to record the purchases they made in the summer and not exceed the limit set by La Liga. But this club program is more complicated than they imagined. Barcelona signed Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Jules Kounde in the summer, but to sign new signings, they have to cut wages, which has been a big challenge for the club.

Last February,

during an interview

, Pique admitted he may decide to play in the 2022 World Cup. He said:

"Obviously I have left the national team, but I'm the kind of person who might one day say 'oh' and I don't want to close the door fully,"

"I'd say that 99 percent I won't go back, but I don't want to say that 100 percent I won't go back."
