Brighton closing on Villarreal’s left-back Pervis Estupinan

The Seagulls have been in the market for a new left-back since Cucurella departed the club on a £60million deal to join Chelsea. Although Chelsea’s youngster Levi Colwill moved to Brighton on a 12-month loan to help fill the void left by Cucurella, the club is closing on a more permanent option.

According to

Relevo

, Brighton is close to signing Villarreal's

Pervis Estupinan

for a reported €17m fee.

The 24-year-old joined the

Yellow Submarines

in 2020 from Watford on a €16.4m deal. Although he joined Villarreal after he already established himself as one of the most impressive left-backs in La Liga after a season at

Osasuna

, he failed to live up to expectations at Villarreal as fell below Alberto Moreno and Alfonso Pedraza in the Unai Emery’s pecking order.

The La Liga side has been strongly linked with Giovani Lo Celso and Umar Sadiq as the money earned from Estupinan will be reportedly invested in the squad.

Earlier,

Brighton

's boss Graham Potter tried to explain the club's situation regarding the transfer of

Marc Cucurella

.

"

We didn't want to sell him, and we didn't need to sell him,"

Potter said in a news conference.

"At the same time, you understand if a Champions League club comes with Champions League resources and finance, and the player indicates there is a desire to do it, it is very difficult for us.”

After a goalless draw against Newcastle United, Brighton will head to London to face

West Ham

next Sunday.
