Eto'o sentenced to prison after tax evasion charge

The former Barcelona star committed financial misconduct late in his time at the club.

Former

Barcelona

star Samuel Eto'o has been sentenced to prison for tax evasion.

The president of the

Cameroon

Football Federation, along with his former agent Jose Maria Mesalles, has confessed to the fraud in front of the Spanish tax authorities. Marca claims that Eto'o's charges dates back to 2006 and 2009 when he was at Camp Nou and that he is said to have lost € 3.8 million in taxes he owed.

Eto'o reportedly admitted the allegations but claimed that Mesalles and his father was responsible given his age at the time. The initial sentence of 4 years and 6 years imprisonment for Eto'o and Mesalles was reduced by the court to 22 months and 1 year. Eto'o now has to pay his fine in four installments, which will be a total of 1.8 million euros, and Masays was fined 905 thousand euros.

The Barcelona star's tax evasion is related to the salary he received from the club, as well as the income he received from his sponsor Puma, which transferred money from Spain to Hungary.
