Netherlands 2-2 Poland: Depay misses penalty as Dutch draw thriller
After falling behind 2-0 to Poland, the Netherlands had a chance to win, but Memphis Depay missed a penalty at the end of the game in Rotterdam.
missed a penalty kick in stoppage time that would have made a huge difference for the
Netherlands. As a result, they tied 2-2 with Poland.
Even though Poland left
Robert Lewandowskion the bench for the whole
Nations League Group
A4 match, Matty Cash and Piotr Zielinski's goals put
Poland
in a strong position. But Davy Klaassen tied it up two minutes later, and Denzel Dumfries tied it up for the Netherlands five minutes later.
Cash's handball gave Depay a chance to win the game from the penalty spot, but the
Barcelona
player hit the post, and the teams split the points. Cash got the ball on the right side and drilled his first international goal into the bottom left corner with a great finish, giving Poland the lead.
The Netherlands responded well, but were still two goals behind when Przemyslaw Frankowski set up Zielinski for an easy finish after Krzysztof Piatek played a great ball in behind. VAR was used to overturn an offside call in the buildup. Klaassen quickly cut the deficit when he volleyed Daley Blind's cross into the goal, and Louis van Gaal's team were even soon after when VAR allowed Dumfries' deflected shot after the offside flag had gone up.
Cash touched the ball after Depay was stopped by Lukasz Skorupski, and referee Halil Umut Meler pointed to the spot after watching a video of the play.
Depay didn't take advantage of the chance, and Skorupski also blocked one of his headers, so the Netherlands didn't get the win. The Netherlands lost a chance to make a big step toward the Nations League finals because Depay missed a penalty.
Wales tied Belgium 1-1, so if Depay had made his penalty kick, Van Gaal's team would have been five points ahead of Wales at the top of Group A4 instead of two. Instead, they lost to Poland for the first time after five straight wins.
