Russia wants to host Euro 2028 or 2032 despite football ban

Russia and Turkey have declared their interest in hosting Euro 2028.

Russia

and

Turkey

have declared an interest in rivalling the

Ireland

and the

UK

for Euro 2028. Russia and Turkey also want to host Euro 2032. UEFA will announce the host nations for both tournaments in September 2023.

Russia is among the candidates to host the

European Championship

in either 2028 or 2032 despite being banned from international sport following the invasion of Ukraine.

On whether a bid from Russia could even be admitted and considered, a UEFA statement said: “

The Bureau of the FIFA Council and the UEFA executive committee decided on February 28 to suspend all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice. However, no suspension of the Russian Football Union was imposed at that time.

The UEFA Executive Committee will nevertheless remain on standby to convene further extraordinary meetings, to reassess the legal and factual situation as it evolves and adopt further decisions as necessary, including in light of the declaration of interest expressed by the Russian Football Union for hosting the UEFA EURO.”
