Cameroon changed their head coach by order of the country's president
Cameroon has appointed Rigobert Song as Toni Conceicao's replacement after placing third in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Toni Conceicao
has been fired as Cameroon's manager, and
Rigobert Song
has been named as his successor.
Following last month's
Africa Cup of Nationssetback, the country's president,
Paul Biya
, ordered the removal of the manager.
The Indomitable Lions had been aiming for continental success on home ground but were defeated by Egypt in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals, resulting in a third-place finish.
Conceicao was hired in 2019 and has also led
Cameroonto the 2022 World Cup qualification play-offs, which begin later this month with a two-legged tie against Algeria.
The Cameroonian Football Federation confirmed his dismissal on Monday, so the 60-year-old will not be in command for the next double-header.
Shortly after, Cameroon stated that Song, the country's most capped player with 137 matches, will take over from Conceicao with immediate effect.
A statement signed by Minister of Sports
Narcisse Mouelle Kombi
read:
"On very high instructions from the President of the Republic, the coach of the men's national football team, Mr Antonio Conceicao, has been replaced by Rigobert Song.
"The Cameroonian Football Federation is invited to take the necessary measures for a rapid and harmonious implementation of these very high directives."
During his football career, Song played for
Premier Leaguesides Liverpool and West Ham United, and he helped Cameroon win two Africa Cup of Nations titles.
The 45-year-old has most recently coached Cameroon's Under-23s team and served as interim manager of the senior team in 2018.
Former Equatorial Guinea and Kenya leader Sebastien Migne will help him in the post.
