Weiler left Al-Ahly because of Covid-19 - Former assistant

The Swiss coach Suddenly left the club after reaching the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Former

Al Ahly

assistant coach David Siza believes that Swiss coach Rene Weiler left Cairo only because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Weiler left the team unpredictably after a successful spell with the Red Devils at the end of the 2020-2019 season. The 47-year-old coach won two championships with the Egyptian team in the Egyptian Super Cup and Premier League. He also reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League but left the team before the game. Siza, who was Weiler's assistant during the era, believes the Swiss coach had no plans to leave Cairo, but the Covid-19 crisis forced him to do so.

He said:

“It was a great time with Al Ahly and very difficult because of the Covid-19 pandemic. We won the Egyptian Super Cup against Zamalek, but then had to leave because of the coronavirus.

“There were no negotiations to return to Al Ahly, these were just rumours, but it’s nice that people in Egypt still talk about me as it means we did a good job when were with Al Ahly.

“I think that if it wasn’t for Covid-19, Weiler would’ve stayed for another two or three years at least, but we have to accept what happened.

“I had started negotiations with an Egyptian team but things didn’t work out. I love the Egyptian Premier League, it’s very competitive and I don’t mind coaching in Egypt in the future.

“Al Ahly is a great team and it is would be an honour for me to come back here in the future, but I also have no problem working in Zamalek, or Pyramids which is also a big club."
