VAR to be used in all AFCON matches

VAR will be used in all 52 matches in the Africa Cup of Nations.

For the first time in the history of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in all 52 matches of the competition.

The tournament kicks off on Sunday, January 9, where hosts, Cameroon, face Burkina Faso at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.

VAR was previously used from the quarterfinals onward in the Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt 2019, however, with the intention of improving the image of refereeing and preparing world-class referees, CAF has decided to use VAR from the beginning of the tournament.

63 match officials, including high-profile women referees such as Salima Mukasanga (Rwanda), Carine Atemzabong (Cameroon), Fatiha Jermoumi (Morocco) and Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco) will officiate in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.
