Neville: Greenwood needs another year of Cavani being alongside him

The Red Devils legend hopes Manchester United will offer a contract extension to the Uruguayan.

Having ended his 7-year stay at

PSG

,

Edinson Cavani

joined

Manchester United

last summer. The Uruguayan center-forward has spent a successful debut season at Old Trafford as he has featured in 20 league matches for the Red Devils. The 34-year-old has managed to score 7 goals and provide 2 assists for his teammates.

Gary Neville

says he was afraid of Cavani becoming another unsuccessful signing like Radamel Falcao or Alexis Sanchez, but he believes the Red Devils must renew the experienced forward’s contract.

He told

Sky Sports

:

"Tottenham had a throw with two minutes to go, and Cavani was moving between the centre-backs trying to stop the ball from being thrown in, and he's organising where [Mason] Greenwood should be. I thought: 'Greenwood needs another year of Cavani being alongside him'.

"It inspired us as young players when you saw great players like Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce and Eric Cantona and Mark Hughes. And you see the best players in the world, or those who have been the best in the world like Cavani, doing his work like that in the 94th minute, someone like Mason Greenwood, who needs people who are mentors, good standards above him, who can coach him on the pitch. I just thought him and Marcus Rashford need another year of Cavani.”

Cavani has recently been linked with a move away from Manchester United. The player’s contract at Old Trafford will expire in June and

Boca Juniors

are reportedly interested in signing him in the upcoming summer transfer window.

"He's been a really brilliant example. I was a little bit nervous of him coming in, because of Falcao, Alexis Sanchez, showcase signings. This one has been different. He's really applied himself brilliantly and has been a big help to Manchester United.

"He does the right things. The right movements. It's clockwork, that run across the defender, across the near post, the one you're always trying to get young strikers to do."

Manchester United will play against

Granada

in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

’s team will host the Spanish side as they are 2-0 ahead on aggregate.
