Euro 2020: Hungary vs. Portugal match preview- team news, lineups

Portugal has always been a potential champion and a tough-to-beat opponent in the euro tournaments but Hungary will do whatever it takes to get the 3 points it needs to stand on the top of the group ranking.

Portugal

will be aiming to win their second European Championship in a row this summer, and Fernando Santos's team will kick off their Euro 2020 campaign in Budapest against Hungary.

Given the caliber of Group F, the Selecao will be determined to get off to a solid start today, but

Hungary

is now a squad to be considered seriously at this level of football.

Let’s take a look at the team and line-ups hours before

Hungary vs. Portugal match

.

Hungary vs. Portugal match preview

It is better if we first check out the group that these two teams are in and then get into the article.

Group F:

Hungary, Portugal, France,

Germany

We are currently looking at group F which consists of super-powerful teams like France and Germany, thus Hungary will need to get those 3 points today if it wants to have any chance of qualifying.

Form analysis

How did they perform in the previous matches? We are about to find out.

Hungary

After finishing third in the 1964 European Championship and fourth in 1972, Hungary did not qualify for the competition's finals until Euro 2016.

In the last European Championship, Nemzeti Tizenegy finished first in Group F, finishing ahead of Portugal, before falling to Belgium in the round of 16.

Hungary qualified for the finals of this year's tournament through the playoffs, defeating Bulgaria and then Iceland, with Dominik Szoboszlai scoring a last-minute winner in the final.

Hungary's Euro 2020

preparations have been excellent, with a 1-0 win over

Cyprus

earlier this month and a goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland.

Because of this group's strength, finishing in the top three spots will be extremely difficult, but a strong result against Portugal in their opening will undoubtedly have fans dreaming of what could happen.

Portugal

In the group stages of Euro 2016, this national team did not win a single game, drawing all three of their matches, but they still managed to qualify for the tournament in third place, which they could then do again this summer.

Portugal advanced to the final after defeating Croatia in extra time and then defeating Poland on penalties in the semi-finals. They then defeated

Wales

2-0 to reach the final.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s national team has an excellent overall record in this competition, having advanced to the semi-finals in 1984, 2000, and 2012, as well as quarter-finals in 1996 and 2008. Portugal finished second in Euro 2004 on home soil and is expected to progress further in this year's tournament.

Meanwhile, Santos' team is on a six-game winning streak, having drawn 0-0 with Spain before hammering Israel 4-0 in two friendlies earlier this month.

Hungary vs. Portugal – head-to-head in all competition

These two teams have met each other in the green field in the competition a total of 13 times. It is just shocking to say that Portugal has never lost to Hungary.

Starting with a 3-3 draw on 26 December 1926, most of their matches were friendlies. 9 wins for Portugal and 4 draws for both, Hungary’s chances to win has always seemed slim. Would they be able to make history by defeating Portugal? We shall see.

Line-ups and formation

We have already talked about the lineup of each team in a much more comprehensive manner on the Sportmob website, you can check it out to see the full article but we should once more get over them briefly to see what they have brought with them to this tournament.

Hungary

Willi Orban and Attila Szalai are certain starters at the back, while the other spot in the back three is up for consideration, as is the right-sided wing-back place.

Roland Sallai has been out recently with a minor ailment, but the 24-year-old is expected to be healthy for the Group opener, where he will team up with leader Adam Szalai in the final third of the field.

In a 3-5-2 system, Adam Lang might start at the back, with Laszlo Kleinheisler on the right and Bristol City's Adam Nagy in the center.

  • Probable lineup for Hungary:

Gulacsi; Lang, Orban, Attila Szalai; Lovrencsics, Kleinheisler, Nagy, Schafer, Varga; Sallai, Adam Szalai

Portugal

Bernardo Silva and Jota are anticipated to start alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the front three for Portugal, while Bruno Fernandes will almost certainly start in a deeper position.

Because Portugal's midfield is so deep, it's tough to predict who will play beside Fernandes, but Santos may opt for Danilo and Neves to help out the back four.

Ruben Dias, fresh off a fantastic season with Manchester City, will start in the center of the defense alongside Fonte, with Raphael Guerreiro getting the nod at left-back over the young youth Nuno Mendes due to his experience.

However, Joao Cancelo tested positive for coronavirus ahead of the match, which means Nelson Semedo might play at right-back.

  • Probable lineup for Portugal:

PatrIcio; Semedo, Dias, Fonte, Guerreiro; Danilo, Neves, Fernandes; Bernardo, Ronaldo, Jota

Prediction

Due to Portugal's amazing record against Hungary, it seems near impossible for the opposing team to be able to break the record and defeat the Os Navegadores.

Although one player can not be much of an influence for the team but Ronaldo is one-man army and he has proven it a few times now. Based on these factors we guess that Portugal would come out victorious by a result of 2-0.
