Oldest Premier League Players in 2020

What’s your guess? How old are the oldest Premier League players in 2020? We can just say they are something between 35 and 38 years old meaning that they are near retirement or even may not appear in the next season. However, there is one more point to take notice of here…

By the oldest Premier League players in 2020 we mean the oldest players in EPL - of 2020 in fact - who have been used on the pitch not those ones who have stayed on the bench all season.

In other words, by the

oldest footballers in the Premier League this season

, we mean oldest active players in EPL this season, even if their active time has been less or even much less than younger players in the major English league.

Oldest Current Players in EPL

As already mentioned, the oldest current players in EPL are something between 35 and 38 years old and have played some time during the past season, although much less than younger players.

The list of oldest football players in the Premier League 2019-20 season starts with Chelsea’s substitute goalkeeper,

Willy Caballero

, who is the oldest current player in EPL with an age of almost 39 years, who also serve the Premier League club in the next season to come (2020-21). But what about the rest of the list? Stay with us to know!

Also please note that the exact age of the players mentioned in front of their names in parentheses are as of August 17, 2020.

Willy Caballero (38 years, 10 months, and 20 days)

Number one on the list of

oldest Premier League players in 2020

, Chelsea’s substitute goalkeeper, Willy Caballero, is actually the oldest current player in EPL standing with an age of near 39 years - exactly 38 years and 10 months.

The interesting fact about the Argentinian goalkeeper is that he has also been named on Chelsea’s squad for the next season (2020-21) meaning that he will probably continue to be the oldest player in the Premier League for the next season too.

While Chelsea’s first goalkeeper,

Kepa Arrizabalaga

, has made 33 appearances in this season of EPL (2019-20), Willy Caballero has made only 5, however, that’s enough to get him on the list of oldest football players in the Premier League in 2019-20 season and, in fact, on top of the list since there are no other older players than him currently in the Premier League.

Caballero has joined Chelsea since 2017 and since that time has made a total of 10 appearances for the Premier League club from which 5 have been in 2019-20 season. Before that, he played for

Manchester City

from 2014 to 2017 and made more appearances for them - actually 23.

The Argentinian goalkeeper has actually made the most number of appearances for the Spanish club, Elche: 186 appearances between 2004 and 2011.

Phil Jagielka (38 years)

Exactly 38 years old as of August 17, 2020,

Phil Jagielka

is the second player on the list of oldest Premier League players in 2020 with an age of 38 - he’s actually the second and last player and also the only defender on the list with the age of 38.

Jagielka has only served two Premier League clubs during his career: Sheffield United and Everton with the latter having a greater share of Jagielka’s service which lasted 12 years for them, namely from 2007 to 2019.

The 38-year-old English defender has made 322 appearances for Everton between the time period mentioned above (2007 to 2019), while he has made only 254 appearances between 2000 and 2007 and only 6 appearances in 2019-20 season for Sheffield United which sums up to 260 appearances in total.

That is still 62 appearances less than the ones Jagielka has made for Everton, so, although the English defender is currently a Sheffield United player, he’s more an

Everton

one concerning the number of appearances he has made for the Premier League club.

Pepe Reina (37 years, 11 months, and 18 days)

With a margin of less than one year from the first position on the list of oldest Premier League players in 2020,

Pepe Reina

is actually the third player on the list with an age of 37 years, 11 months, and 18 days.

Reina is actually the former goalkeeper of Liverpool who has served the Premier League club more than any other club during his career - actually from 2005 to 2013 where he made 285 appearances for them.

From 2013 up to 2018, Reina has been serving

Napoli

, Bayern Munich and AC Milan either on permanent contract or on loan, however, from 2019 on, he’s been again to Premier League - actually on loan to the Premier League club, Aston Villa.

The 37-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has made 12 appearances for Villa this season (2019-20), and during these appearances he has made 33 saves, has earned 2 clean sheets, and has conceded 20 goals.

Reina is the winner of Premier League Golden Glove in three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2008. He was also named Liverpool Player of the Season in 2009-10 season.

Ben Foster (37 years, 4 months, and 15 days)

Another goalkeeper on the list of oldest Premier League players in 2020 who is also among the

best goalkeepers in the Premier League 2019-20 season

, Ben Foster has been serving Watford since 2018 and has made 76 appearances for the Premier League club since.

In fact, Foster has served more than ten clubs both in the Premier League and lower tiers in the English football league system during his career some of whom include Manchester United, Bristol City, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, and indeed, Watford.

The 37-year-old English goalkeeper has served

West Bromwich Albion

more than any other club during his career - actually for six years between 2012 and 2018 where he made 172 appearances for the Premier League club.

If he just want to reach that record again, he must appear for Watford in 52 more matches - he has actually made 120 appearances for Watford overall between 2006 and 2007 where he was on loan to the Premier League club from Manchester United and from 2018 to this date (the former period 44 appearances and the latter 76).

Claudio Bravo (37 years, 4 months, and 4 days)

Only 11 days younger than the 3rd-position Ben Foster,

Claudio Bravo

is the fourth player and third goalkeeper on the list of

oldest Premier League players in 2020

with an age of 37 years, 4 months and 4 days - in fact as of August 17, 2020.

If you ask us, Bravo is more a La Liga player than a Premier League one. He actually had a 10-year spell in La Liga with Real Sociedad and Barcelona before joining Manchester City in 2016.

And Bravo has made 299 La Liga appearances during this time (10 years) while he has only made 29 Premier League appearances in 4 years which means he has made 4 times more appearances in La Liga than in Premier League (on average, 30 appearances a year in La Liga while only 7 appearances a year in the Premier League).

However, despite all these facts, today, the 37-year-old Chilean goalkeeper is a Premier League player, and that’s what matters for us! As already mentioned, the number of appearances Bravo has made in the Premier League - in fact for Manchester City - is 29, and from all these 29 appearances 22 were made in the first season (2016-17) he joined the club.

`Seems Bravo has been much more active in the first season he joined Manchester City. In this season (2019-20) he has only made 4 appearances for the Premier League club keeping 1 clean sheet and conceding 7 goals, however, that’s enough to get him on the list of

oldest footballers in the Premier League this season

.

Glenn Murray (36 years, 10 months, and 23 days)

The first forward on the list of

oldest players in EPL in 2020

, Glenn Murray has also served more than ten clubs in the Premier League and lower tiers of the English football league system - just like Ben Foster. Some of these clubs include Carlisle United, Rochdale, Crystal Palace, AFC Bournemouth and Brighton and Hove Albion.

From all the above-mentioned clubs,

Murray

has served Brigton and Hove Albion more with the 233 appearances he has made for the Premier League club between 2008 and 2011 and 2017 to this date.

The total number of his appearances for Albion (233) is more than two times the number of appearances he has made for Crystal Palace (112) and five to ten times higher than the number of appearances he has made for other clubs.

And despite his old age, Murray has appeared in all the Albion’s Premier League matches, namely 38, in 2018-19 season and 35 and 23 league matches the Seagulls had in 2017-18 and 2019-20 seasons, respectively. Quite a great share of matches to appear in for a player of his age!

Wes Morgan (36 years, 6 months, and 27 days)

Another defender on the list of oldest players in EPL in 2020, Westley Nathan Morgan, simply known as

Wes Morgan

, is an English defender with Jamaican origin who has served only two clubs during his career: Nottingham Forest and Leicester City; the first one from 2002 to 2012 and the second one from 2012 to this date.

For the first four years Morgan joined

Leicester City

, he played almost in all league matches both in 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons when Leicester City competed in Championship and 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons when the English club competed in the Premier League.

However, after that the number of Morgan’s appearances decreased gradually so that in the 2019-20 season he made only 11 league appearances for the Foxes. Maybe because of his age? Maybe!

Jose Holebas (36 years, 1 month, and 21 days)

The third defender after Phil Jagielka on the list of

oldest Premier League players in 2020

, Jose Holebas is a German-American footballer with Greek origin who can represent all the three nations (Germany, United States, and Greece) in international arenas, though he has chosen Greece over the two other nations and has actually made 38 appearances for the Greek national team between 2011 and 2016.

Although

Holebas

is not currently a Premier League player - his contract with Watford ended this summer, he still can be on the list of oldest players in EPL in 2020, since he has actually played for Watford in 2019-20 season.

The 36-year-old Greek defender has made 114 league appearances for Watford between 2015 and 2020 which is actually more than the number of appearances he has made for any other club he has served so far.

In fact, Watford is the only Premier League club Holebas has ever served and the club that has the highest share of Holebas’ appearances. And the most number of league appearances the Greek defender has made for

Watford

in a single season was in 2016-17 season where he appeared in 33 matches for the Premier League club.

In this season (2019-20), however, that number has reduced to only 14. Maybe because of his age? Maybe and maybe not, because he actually received an ankle injury midseason that could be the cause why he appeared in less matches.

Michael McGovern (36 years, 1 month, and 5 days)

The fourth goalkeeper on the list of oldest Premier League players in 2020,

Michael McGovern

is an Irish goalkeeper who’s been to the Premier League since 2016 when he joined Norwich City in the same year. He appeared only 22 times for Norwich City in league competitions and from all these 22 appearances 20 of which took place in the first season he joined the club (2016-17).

McGovern is named among the

oldest current players in EPL

because he actually played in the Premier League in 2019-20 season.

It may be interesting for you to know that from 2016 to 2019, the 36-year-old Irish goalkeeper actually served Norwich city in the Championship, so from all his appearances at league level, only two have taken place in the Premier League. That’s enough, however, to name him on the list of oldest players in EPL in 2020.

Leighton Baines (35 years, 8 months, and 6 days)

Having served only two English clubs, namely Wigan Athletic and Everton, during his career,

Leighton Baines

is an English defender who has made a total of 493 appearances at league level in English football - actually in the Premier League (348 appearances) and in League One (145 appearnaces for the Latics).

Leighton Baines announced his retirement at the end of 2019-20 season, however, since he has played in the Premier League in the same season he can be on the list of oldest players in EPL in 2020.

The number of appearances Baines made for Everton decreased considerably in 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons with 6 appearances in the former and 8 appearances in the latter season. Maybe because of his age? We say ja for sure, because the 35-year-old retired English defender actually made more than 30 appearances in most seasons he served

Everton

.

Pablo Zabaleta (35 years, 7 months, and 1 day)

The only Argentinian footballer on the list of

oldest Premier League players in 2020

with an age of more than 35, Pablo Zabaleta is actually a recently retired defender who, like Leighton Baines, played in 2019-20 season, so he could be named on the list of oldest football players in the Premier League in 2019-20 season, too.

Zabaleta

served Manchester United more than any other club during his career. He actually made 230 league appearances for the Premier League club which is almost three times higher than the appearances he made for West Ham United (72) and Espanyol (79).

However, it was West Ham United that the 35-year-old Argentinian defender served in the last three years of his career, namely from 2017 to 2020.

And Zabaleta made 37, 26, and 10 appearances in 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20 seasons for West Ham respectively. As you see, the number of appearances has decreased year by year and the reason is quite clear: he’s gotten old!

Leon Clarke (35 years, 6 months, and 7 days)

The second forward on the list of oldest footballers in the Premier League in 2019-20 season,

Leon Clarke

has played for more than 15 English and Scottish clubs during his career with many of these clubs having Clarke only for a short period of time and on loan.

Although there is no serious talk of Clarke’s retirement as of yet, the player’s contract with the last club he served, namely Sheffield United, has ended with no new club to have signed him for the next season to come.

If you ask us that is an obvious indication of retirement, however, since the 35-year-old English forward has actually played in 2019-20 season in the Premier League, he can still be on the list of oldest players in EPL in 2020.

Clarke joined Sheffield United in 2016 when they were still competing in League One - the third tier of English football league system.

However, in the same season (2016-17), Sheffield United promoted to the Championship and then two seasons later, actually in 2018-19 season, they promoted to the Premier League.

So, Leon Clarke played in 2019-20 season in the Premier League, although he only made 2 appearances for the Blades; a number which is considerably lower than 24 and 39 appearances Clarke made in the Championship for the same club.

Lukasz Fabianski (35 years, and 4 months)

The only Polish goalkeeper and indeed player on the list of

oldest Premier League players in 2020

, Lukasz Fabianski has served two Premier League clubs during his career: Arsenal from 2007 to 2014 and West Ham United from 2018 to now.

The interesting fact about Fabianski is that although he has served Arsenal more - actually for seven years, he has made more appearances for West Ham.

Fabianski

has made only 32 appearances for Arsenal in 7 seasons - almost 5 appearances each season on average, while he has made 63 appearances for West Ham in 2 seasons which translates to almost 32 appearances in each season.

In exact words, the 35-year-old Polish goalkeeper has made 38 and 25 appearances for West Ham in 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons respectively. And with this number of appearances, it seems that his career is not going to end soon!

Fernandinho (35 years, 3 months, and 13 days)

The first Brazilian defender on the list of oldest footballers in the Premier League 2019-20 season who can also play as a defensive midfielder, Fernando Luiz Roza, simply known as Fernandinho, has been serving the Premier League club, Manchester City, since 2013 making 224 appearances for them in the process which exactly translates to 32 appearances each season - in fact out of 38 appearances that a player can make in a Premier League season.

So with that stats, we can say Fernandinho has been more active - in fact much more active!, than other players on the list of oldest players in EPL in 2020 already mentioned. He is also in Manchester City 2020-21 squad meaning that he continues to be among the oldest players in EPL in the next season too.

And the Rest of the List

Below is a list of other players in EPL who are only one or two years younger than the oldest players in EPL 2019-20 season. These players could be somehow or other considered as the oldest ones too, in fact after the players who have already been mentioned in this post.
