Inter 3-1 Roma: Nerazzurri tornado in the Scudetto race

Inter topped Serie A with a 3-1 win over Roma on Saturday, thanks to goals from Denzel Dumfries, Marcelo Brozovic, and Lautaro Martinez.

Inter

reclaimed first place in Serie A with a comfortable 3-1 victory against Roma at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Saturday.

Despite a late strike by

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

, the Nerazzurri won with goals from Denzel Dumfries,

Marcelo Brozovic

, and Lautaro Martinez, extending their outstanding record against the team from the Italian capital.

The setback came as a significant blow to the Giallorossi's aspirations of European qualifying, and it was neither the outcome or performance that former Inter coach

Jose Mourinho

had hoped for.

Simone Inzaghi will have been happy with what he witnessed from his squad, which has moved a point ahead of

Milan

in the Scudetto race after playing the same amount of games as their city rivals, who face Lazio in Rome on Sunday. Inter seized the lead shortly before the half-hour mark when Hakan Calhanoglu played a through pass to Dumfries, who raced onto it like a striker and slotted the opener past Rui Patricio.

Brozovic found himself on the left side of the penalty area before cutting inside Gianluca Mancini and blasting into the far top corner of the net to make it 2-0 just 10 minutes later. A lovely ball from Nicolo Barella found Martinez, whose effort was parried behind for a corner, but the Argentine headed home the resultant out-swinging delivery from Calhanoglu early in the second half.

A cross from the right was helped back to Patricio by

Rick Karsdorp

, who realized he couldn't pick up the ball and quickly kicked it away before Joaquin Correa could take advantage.

With five minutes remaining, Mkhitaryan hammered a consolation past Samir Handanovic from right inside the box, but it was too little, too late for the visitors. Inter has won all ten of their Serie A matches versus Roma. Inter travels to Bologna on Wednesday for more Serie A action, while Roma travels to England on Thursday to face Leicester City in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final.
