Club 

The first team he played in was Karlsruher SC and now we want to know about it.

Karlsruher SC 

Calhanoglu made his professional debut with Karlsruher SC in the 2. Bundesliga in February 2012, after being promoted from the under-19 squad, albeit the club was demoted to the 3. Liga after his first season. In the summer of 2012, he signed a four-year contract with Hamburger SV but was loaned back to Karlsruhe for another season. He helped the squad win the third division and return to the second tier during his loan season.

Hamburger SV 

Calhanoglu made his Bundesliga debut for Hamburg on August 11, 2013, when the team opened the season with a 3–3 draw at

. He started the game and was replaced after 74 minutes by Dennis Aogo. After replacing goalscorer Rafael van der Vaart in the 79th minute, he scored a minute later and then netted again with a free-kick in a 4–0 home triumph over

on August 31.

Calhanoglu's contract with Hamburg was extended for another two years on February 5, 2014, keeping him at the club until 2018. On February 20, he scored a 41-yard free-kick in a 3–0 triumph over Borussia Dortmund, putting an end to Hamburg's poor form. Hamburg was initially hesitant to sell Calhanoglu to other German clubs, but their purchase of

His activities leading up to the transfer sparked debate, including taking sick leave from Hamburg, which he justified by claiming was due to fan violence, including the destruction of his car. He also slammed Hamburg director Oliver Kreuzer, accusing him of betraying the city. Son Heung-min later slammed the deal after Calhanoglu called his former Leverkusen teammate's transfer to

International 

Calhanoglu was born in Germany but chose to play for Turkey because of his family's Trabzon roots. He played youth international football for his country, most notably in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which was hosted in his own country. Turkey advanced to the quarterfinals before being knocked out by France. Calhanoglu scored the equalizer in Turkey's 2–1 win against Australia in their second group game on June 28 at the Huseyin Avni Aker Stadium in his hometown.

Calhanoglu scored his first international goal in a 2–1 friendly win over Luxembourg on March 31, 2015.
