Bundesliga Team of The 2020-21 Season

At the beginning of the new Bundesliga season, let's have a look at the Bundesliga team of the 2020-21 season.

The 2020-21 Bundesliga campaign ended with the expected

Bayern Munich

championship. The Bavarians won their 9th consecutive Bundesliga title with 13 points more than the second place. In the second place, it was RB

Leipzig

, with one point more than Borussia Dortmund. The last Qualified team for the Champions League is VfL Wolfsburg. Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen are two qualifiers to the European League.

Bayern Munich's manager Hansi Flick left to become the Germany national team manager. His replacement came from the runner up team, Leipzig.

Robert Lewandowski

had a wonderful season and scored 41 goals in the season. His magnificent performance gave a little bit of space for other stars to shine, and one of the stars was indeed

Erling Haaland

. The 21 years old striker has scored 42 goals in 45 league games for Dortmund.

Of all the

Bundesliga team of the season

players, none of them has left the Bundesliga and that's a big achievement. In fact, except for Andre Silva, they are all in their previous season team.

Read on to find out more about the Bundesliga team of the 2020-21 season:

In the 58th season of Bundesliga, Bayern’s Lewandowski managed to set a new record for goals scored in a season with 41.

Manuel Neuer

Bayern Munich captain had a busy season lifting various trophies and breaking records. Harvesting titles is what you expect from the captain of Bayern, but record-breaking is way harder in big clubs. The goalkeeper of

the 2020/21 Bundesliga team of the season

is in great form at the age of 35 and his experience has unlocked a new aspect of him.

Neuer

is known for being a trademark sweeper-keeper. The role has its risk of leaving an open goal. Neuer made a few mistakes when he was younger, but now he hardly makes any mistakes. The 2019-20 season was a dream season for Bayern winning the Champions League alongside the domestic double. Neuer was the most capped player with 46 appearances, just behind the vice-captain

Thomas Muller

.

In the table of clean sheets, RB Leipzig's Peter Gulasci led with 15 clean sheets and Koen Casteels of

Wolfsburg

, with 14  clean sheets, was in second place. Neuer with nine, was in 4th place while Stefan Ortega from Arminia Bielefeld made two clean sheets more. Despite conceding more goals than four other Bundesliga teams, Neuer made his 200th clean sheet with Bayern and broke the record of legendary Sepp Maier.

Ridle Baku

Ridle Baku

was the biggest transfer of Wolfsburg in the 2020 summer transfer window. Baku came from his hometown club

Mainz

, and wore number 20 of the Wolves. The 23 years old played as a right back for half of the season but towards the end, he got more offensive responsibilities as a right midfielder and right winger.

Baku and

Renato Steffen

had a big role in Wolfsburg and they made a great partnership with

Wout Weghorst

. Baku scored six goals and delivered six assists in the 2020-21 Bundesliga. He had 34 shots, of which 11 of them were on target, and had 40 key passes. He had a total of 72 tackle attempts and 45 of them were successful. The manager of Germany national team,

Joachim Löw

called him up and Baku made his debut for the national team.

Baku and Steffen each created three assists for Weghorst and the Dutch striker returned three assists to Baku. Christopher Trimmel from Union Berlin was the other right back having an impressive season. Despite the good performance by the Polish right back, Baku made his way to the 2020/21 Bundesliga team of the season.

Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels

could be the vice-captain of

Dortmund

if he didn't go to Bayern in the middle of his career. He was a part of Bayern Munich youth academy but he spent the majority of his career in Dortmund. The one thing Hummels didn't change is his high standing playing quality and In both clubs, he won numerous trophies. Hummels' consistency combined with his ability to read the game has been a nightmare for the opponent strikers.

The 32 years old defender has displayed the leading role in the defense due to the confidence he has gained. He has paired up with

Manuel Akanji

in the middle of the defensive line, who is 26 years old. Hummels scored five goals for the Black and Yellows and only three Dortmund players scored more goals. Despite his age, Hummels has not lost agility and physical strength, and those two are serving his intelligent style of play.

He won 122 aerial duels which are more than any other defender in the league. He has ranked 3rd for the interceptions with 73 successful attempts. All the defensive attributes should not make his playmaking skills go unnoticed. In the 2020-21 season, he had 2313 accurate passes with an average of 80 passes per game.

Angeliño

Leipzig sold two strong central defenders.

Dayot Upamecano

joined Bayern Munich and Ibrahima Konaté went to

Liverpool

. Despite the departure of two talented defenders, Leipzig should not be worried because Willi Orban and Angeliño are phenomenal. Angeliño has one of the highest numbers of crosses from open play in 2020-21 Bundesliga while he is a defender.

The 24 year old Spaniard was not trusted in

Manchester City

and he was a victim of their uncertainty. The English club sent him on several loans and even sold him to PSV Eindhoven. Angeliño was blooming in the Eredivisie but Manchester City bought him back in the winter transfer and once again loaned him out. The 2020-21 season was the first full season for Angeliño and he made it to the

2020–21 Bundesliga

.

In the first 20 fixtures of all the competitions, he scored eight goals and created seven assists making him one of the key offensive players for Leipzig. In 26 league games, Angeliño had 30 interceptions. His success in both defensive and offensive attributes means that he constantly cruises all the field. Angeliño runs an average distance of 10.93km per game; it means he had 560 sprints.

Alphonso Davies

Alphonso Davies

once again proved that he has a lot to offer to the Bundesliga Team of The 2020-21 Season. The born in 2000 full back is one of the most brilliant talents from North America. Bundesliga is a good place for talents because there is less pressure from the media while teams are more willing to use the youngsters.

The Canadian footballer is obviously in good hands. He has played for Bayern's reserve team before going through the senior team. He holds the record for Bundesliga's fastest player with 36.53 km/h velocity. Davies achieved that record in the 2019-20 season when he became a regular first team player. Davies was mentioned in the 2020 FIFA FIFPro World11 and he is willing to be in the 2021 World11 too.

"I keep telling myself: 'nothing is going to stop me from being in the 2021 FIFA Best XI'. Once you're named in the team, you want to stay there!" Davies said about his career goals.

Filip Kostić

is the alternative for the left back role. He was Bundesliga’s second assist provider with 14 assists registered. Kostić also had the second most key passes with 89 big chances created.

Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich

is probably the most valuable player of Bayern Munich. He is going to be the generation's captain when Muller, Neuer, and Lewandowski are no longer playing for Bayern. The 26 years old player has played in several roles for the Bavarians, including right and center back, defensive, central, and even right midfielder. He is a vital player for Bayern and when he missed out on some matches due to injury the team couldn't replace him.

Kimmich has the highest rate of passes per game with 71 successful passes per 90 minutes. The German star scored four goals and made 10 assists in 27 caps. He completed an assist hat trick against

Schalke

That's an impressive number for a defensive midfielder. Three out of 10 assists were provided for Lewandowski to score.

At the beginning of the 2020-21 season followed by the departure of

Thiago Alcantara

, the number six was handed to Kimmich. In the 2020 DFL-Supercup, he scored the winning goal of the match and won the title as well as being the man of the match. The genius player was mentioned in the UEFA Team of 2020 and the FIFA FIFPro World11.

Leon Goretzka

For Bayern's midfield,

Leon Goretzka

goes well with Joshua Kimmich. The fact that Bayern has hired these two brilliant players only by spending an €8 million transfer fee is shocking. The top six most valued players of Bayern have cost only about €60 million and now every one of them costs more than €60 million.

Besides his physical strength, Goretzka has a sharp eye for game reading and playmaking. Goretzka scored five goals and provided five assists in the 2020-21 Bundesliga. He is extraordinary in defensive attributes and wins a lot of balls. The 26 year old has won 233 tackles and 51 aerial duels and that's why he has registered 44 interceptions. Dispossession of the opponent isn't the only function of Goretzka that puts Bayern in an advantage.

Goretzka is very dynamic and he's good at shifting defense to attack. He had a total of 19 key passes and only two of them were long passes. In the last season, he took 42 shots including 13 on target shots. The shooting ability of Goretzka helps the team to try various ways to score. The last stat backing Goretzka up is 10 clearances he made to save the team from threats.

Thomas Müller

The Great Raumdeuter was awakened by Hansi Flick. In the 2019-20 season,

Thomas Müller

broke the record for the most assists in a single Bundesliga season by delivering 21 assists. In the last season, he was the assists leader of the league and registered 18 assists. Müller scored 11 goals and that means he was directly involved in approximately a third of Bavarian’s goals.

He delivered seven assists specifically for Robert Lewandowski and the next player was Leon Goretzka, scoring three passes from Müller. Lewandowski has returned three of Müller's assists. Müller has the second highest rate of key passes per game with 2.9 key passes per ninety minutes, slightly less than Filip Kostić. Considering the total key passes Müller is the leader with 93 key passes in total.

Most of Müller's assists were through balls, while Kostić mostly delivered long passes to scorers. After winning the UEFA Super Cup and DFL-Supercup titles in 2020-21 Müller became the most decorated German footballer ever. It is the 4th time Müller is included in the Bundesliga Team of the Season. One of the reasons for Müller being the king of assists is the quality of chances he creates. In the past season, he created 15 clear-cut chances.

Andre Silva

After a terrible experience with Milan in Serie A,

Andre Silva

was swapped with

Ante Rebic

in Eintracht Frankfurt. Silva surprised everyone with his good form. He scored only two goals for Milan in 25 matches but in the Bundesliga he was different. The Portuguese striker became the main man in the front line pretty soon. The 25 years old striker scored seven goals in the first ten league fixtures.

Silva was named Bundesliga Player of the January for scoring seven goals in five games. On the top scorers’ table, Robert Lewandowski was in the lead while Erling Haaland and Andre Silva were trying for the second spot. Both players scored six goals and registered three assists in the last seven matches of the season, but Silva won by one goal more. Silva has the second highest number of shots per game next to Lewandowski.

Silva had an average of 3.7 shots per game while 2.6 of them were inside the penalty area. More than half of his shots were on target last season. Scoring 0.9 goals per game means, Silva has scored a goal in about every 100 minutes. He scored 16 goals with the right foot, 3 goals using the left, and eight header goals, mostly from crosses Kostić sent.

Robert Lewandowski

In a normal world, Robert Lewandowski would have at least one Ballon dOr. The Polish striker has no limit and he can always surprise you. Lewandowski netted 10 times in the first 2020-21 Bundesliga games. No one had scored 10 goals that quick in the league's history. The 33 years old super striker won The Best FIFA Men's Player of 2020 but controversially the Ballon d'Or got canceled.

Lewandowski scored 21 goals in 16 games beating

Gerd Müller

's 20 goals record. In the UEFA Champions League, he surpassed Raul and became the third top scorer of the competition behind

Ronaldo

and Messi. Before the end of Bundesliga, he surpassed Klaus Fischer too, and now only Gerd Müller has scored more goals than Lewandowski. After a hat-trick against Stuttgart, he missed out four matches due to injury, and when he returned there were four games remaining.

Lewandowski scored a goal in his return game and in the second he did a hat trick again plus an assist in the 6-0 victory over Borussia. He scored a goal in the next match and his goal against

Augsburg

broke Gerd Müller's record for the most goals scored in a single Bundesliga season. Scoring 41 goals in only 29 games means one goal for every 60 minutes.

Erling Haaland

In his first full season for Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga, Haaland has mopped the rest of the awards and titles which Lewandowski didn’t get. The Norwegian striker has reached 25 Bundesliga goals after just 26 league appearances so far in 2020/21. He finished the season third in the scoring charts with 27 goals in 28 appearances. He has the Dortmund record for goals in away games with 16. Also Haaland has scored two or more goals in a game on 10 occasions this season.

Haaland had 3.3 shots per game which is third after Silva with 3.7 and Lewandowski with 4.7. In addition to his incredible goal scoring skills, he has the record for the first and the second fastest speed of the last campaign, with his 22.39 mph (36.04 km/h) sprint against VfB Stuttgart on Matchday 28 proving the fastest.

He became the Bundesliga player of the month in January, November and April. In the champions league, he scored six times in Dortmund's opening four matches of the group stage, including a brace against Club Brugge. Hours before Dortmund's game against

Lazio

he had an injury. In the round of 16, he scored twice against Sevilla. With only fourteen matches played, he reached twenty goals in the competition, also becoming the first person to score multiple times in four consecutive UEFA Champions League appearances.
