Fernando José Torres Sanz, born in Fuenlabrada, Madrid, on March 20, 1984, better known as Fernando Torres, is a former Spanish footballer who played as a forward. He is widely regarded as a legend at the Atlético Madrid. Trained as a striker in Atletico de Madrid's youth academy, he made his debut with the first team in 2001 at the age of 17 and was promoted to the first team the following season. After seven seasons as captain and leader of the red and white club, he was transferred to Liverpool for 36 m euros in 2007.
He played three and a half seasons with the Anfield club, being the top scorer of the team in two of them and forming, under the direction of Rafa Benitez, the so-called "Spanish Liverpool". In this stage he reached his peak at an individual level, being included in the FIFA's FIFPro World XI (2008 and 2009), and finishing third in both the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or in 2008.
In January 2011, after 142 matches and 81 goals with the "Reds", he was signed by Chelsea for 50 million pounds, becoming the sixth major transfer in history, the first in British football and the first by a Spanish player. He played with the London club for another three and a half seasons, in which he won the two biggest continental titles, the Champions League 2011/12 and the European League 2012/13.
Eight years after his departure from
Atletico Madridand after a four-month loan in the same season in AC Milan, he went back to his old club and on January 4, 2015, he was unveiled in a crowded Vicente Calderon, making his debut eleven days later in "El Derbi", in which he scored a double that qualified his team for the next round of Copa del Rey. The following season 2015/16, in which he played 44 games and scored 12 goals, he played in a Champions League final for the second time in his career, but failed to win, unlike in 2012. Fernando Torres Early Life
Born March 20, 1984, Fernando Torres is the third child of Flori and José. His sister Mari Paz and brother Israel are older than him. He started getting interested in football as a child. At the age of 5 he joined his first team, Parque 84. Initially, the Spaniard wanted to be a goalkeeper, the position that his older brother played. At the age of seven, he started to play on a regular basis as a striker in Mario's Holland's indoor children's team.
Three years later, at the age of 10, he was assigned to Rayo 13, a team of eleven players. After a season in which he scored 55 goals, Torres became one of the team's three players who were sent to Atlético Madrid for trial matches. He made an impression on the scouts and in 1995, at the age of 11, he joined the club. A year later Torres received an offer to move to
Real Madrid, a rival of Atlético, which was rejected.

Since graduating from the youth academy of Atlético de Madrid, Torres earned his first big youth trophy in 1998. Atletico sent a U-15 squad to participate in the Nike Cup, including both national and European level, to play with youth teams from across the Europe in which Atletico dominated the competition. Torres played for Atlético Madrid's youth teams for six years before turning professional. In 1999, the attacker signed his first professional contract with the club. Liverpool FCwas finally announced at a press conference. The departure was already apparent shortly before when Atletico had already signed Diego Forlán as a replacement. The transfer fee is estimated at 38 million euros. In Liverpool, he signed a six-year contract and is said to have earned around eight million euros per season. In his second league game, he scored his first Premier League goal against Chelsea FC on August 19, 2007.
In February 2008, he was named Player of the Month. At the end of the season, he finished joint second with Emmanuel Adebayor in the Premier League scoring charts with 24 goals, behind Cristiano Ronaldo with 31. The last time a Liverpool striker scored more than twenty goals in a season was in 1995/96. He also overtook Ruud van Nistelrooy as the top foreign scorer in his first Premier League year.
These performances earned him, among other things, a selection in the squad of the PFA Team of the Year. In the 2008-09 season, Torres scored 14 goals and provided 5 assists in 24 Premier League games. In addition, he scored two goals in the Champions League and one in the FA Cup. In the 2009/10 season, Torres was slowed down by injuries and had to undergo two knee surgeries. Chelsea
On January 31, 2011, Chelsea FC signed Torres for the British record transfer fee of 50 million pounds. He signed a contract for the next five and a half years until June 30, 2016, earning £175,000 per week. Thus, he ranked sixth in international transfer records in football history, as well as first within the Premier League. Torres made his debut for his new club on 6 February 2011 in Chelsea FC's 1-0 home defeat to his old club Liverpool FC and was replaced by Salomon Kalou in the 66th minute.
He did not score a goal in the twelve competitive games that followed. The Kicker magazine, therefore, named his debut at Chelsea a "goalless tragedy". Torres became a backup player and was not immune to the mockery of the fans. Internet sites counted his scoreless minutes and T-shirts reading "I was there when Torres scored" were sold. On April 23, 2011, Torres scored his first goal for Chelsea FC in a 3-0 home win over West Ham United after coming on as a 77th-minute substitute for Didier Drogba. With the opening of the winter transfer window in January 2015,
AC Milanacquired the transfer rights to Torres to loan him to his hometown club Atlético Madrid in exchange for Alessio Cerci until June 30, 2016. Torres was given the shirt number 19 and was presented in front of 45,000 fans at the Estadio Vicente Calderón.
Torres played his first game for Atlético in seven and a half years on January 8, 2015, in a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey round of 16, in the starting eleven under coach Diego Simeone, with whom he had played at Atlético from 2003 to 2005. In the second leg on January 15, 2015, Torres scored both goals for Atlético in a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Meanwhile, he had made his first La Liga appearance on January 11, 2015, when he came on as a 67th-minute substitute for Gabi in a 3-1 defeat to FC Barcelona.
