Insigne 'hurts by watching Napoli and not being there'

The former star of Napoli believes that the club did not show interest in renewing the contract with him.

Former

Napoli

star

Lorenzo Insigne

expressed his sadness about leaving this team and being away from his teammates.

The 31-year-old star ended his tenure with his hometown team at the beginning of the year and joined

Toronto FC

as a free agent. During his 12 years at Naples, Insigne scored 122 goals and 95 assists in 434 games and won two Coppa Italia titles and one Super Cup. However, he is sad to leave Napoli and suffers from not being in the team's games.

He said:

“The regret I have is that we didn’t win in Naples. We had the chance with both Sarri and Spalletti to win the Scudetto and we didn’t manage it. We were this close, especially with Sarri….

“I hope that one day Napoli, even if I’m no longer here, can match this achievement because the fans deserve it, the city gives so much to the team and doesn’t receive this affection. Hopefully one day they can celebrate because they deserve it.”

Asked about not extending his contract with Napoli, Insigne added:

“It wasn’t just up to me. Naples is my home, if I leave here it’ll be to return to Naples. I don’t hide the fact that I miss Naples, but I’m fine here.”
