Pepe Reina returns to Spanish football by joining Villarreal

The Spain international goalkeeper Pepe Reina returns to Villarreal on a one year deal after 17 seasons.

Villarreal

has announced they reached an agreement with

Pepe Reina

and he has signed a contract until June 2023. The 39-year-old goalkeeper joins Villarreal as a free agent. It is expected Reina will serve as a backup to Geronimo Rulli after Sergio Asenjo moved to Valladolid.

Rein first joined Villarreal from

Barcelona

in 2002 when he was the 20-year-old. With Villarreal, he won the Intertoto Cup in 2003 and 2004. He played for them until 2005 and then went to Liverpool. Since then he has played for Napoli, Bayern, AC Milan, Aston Villa, and Lazio.

Reina has played a total of 874 matches as a professional player. He has won the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain. The Goalkeeper has won a UEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup, a Community Shield, and a League Cup with Liverpool. Reina also won a Coppa Italia with Napoli and a Bundesliga with Bayern.
