When Claude joined the U.S Melun at 15, it was no real shocker since Andre-Joseph Makélélé, his father was a footballer with the Leopards, the Democratic Republic of the Congo national football team.

At 16, Claude separated from his family and moved to Brittany, France to join the Brest-Armorique training centre. As once he mentioned, it was not easy to get accustomed to the new life in Brest.

The training academy life was harsh, specifically as it was the first time he was far from his family. He worked very hard in Brest, but it was in the city of Nantes where he savoured the real pleasure of playing.

His hard work, perseverance and zeal saw him being signed up in 1991 December by Football Club de

Nantes

(FC Nantes) when he was still 18 years old. Robert Budzynski, Nantes' sporting director, asserted that once he had discovered Makélélé in Brest, he was a hundred per cent sure he would become the new Emmanuel Petit.

Makelele, the best unappreciated in Real Madrid

One important top fact about Makelele is that in 2000, he joined Real Madrid. His transfer was controversial because Celta did not want to sell Makélélé unless a considerable growth on their offer was made.

Makélélé rejected to train until there was the resolution of his contract. Ultimately, Celta were reluctantly urged to sell him for €14 million, far less than their valuation of the player.

At Real, Makélélé considerably added to his medal tally, winning two Spanish La Liga championships, the Champions League, the Supercopa de España, the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. As an ever-present in Vicente del Bosque's Real Madrid side, Makélélé also stabilized himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

Despite the fact that he was so valuable to the team, Makélélé was relatively one of its most under-paid members, earning a fraction of that paid to teammates like Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo, Raúl, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Steve McManaman and Guti.

When he felt that his position at the club was uncertain after the shock sacking of Del Bosque and the arrival of David Beckham, and inspired by teammates Zidane, Raúl, McManaman and Fernando Morientes, in the summer of 2003 Makélélé decided to ask for an improved contract.

The Real management explicitly declined to consider his request. Upset, Makélélé handed in a transfer request, whereupon he was signed by Chelsea. Club president Florentino Pérez dishonourably poured scorn on Makélélé's footballing abilities and asserted that Makélélé would not be missed and he would be replaced by young players with much better capabilities.

He had a different idea about Makelele from many players like Zidane, who once called Makelele as the entire engine of the team.

Even McManaman in his autobiography, published in 2006,  portrayed Makélélé as the most important and yet least appreciated midfielder at Real.

Retired former Real Madrid, player and captain Fernando Hierro also criticised Pérez for both Makélélé's departure and the manner of his departure when he mentioned that he was a kind of gift, who has a key and base role in the team.

And added that he was undoubtedly the best and the most important player in Real yet unnoticed. The loss of Makélélé was the beginning of the end for Los Galacticos… and that Chelsea would see the beginning of a new dawn with him.

Makelele playing style and potentials

Among the amazing

top

facts

about

Makelele

, one can refer to his potentials. Considered as one of the best players in his position, Makélélé revolutionised the role of the defensive midfielder in the Premier League.

In this role, he was especially famous for his acceleration, positional sense, tactical discipline, cleverness, stamina, and ball-winning skill; although he was not the fastest, most talented or technically skilled player on the ball, or particularly good in the air, he was highly distinguished throughout his career for being capable of functioning as a deep-lying playmaker for his team.

And that was the result of his ability to dictate the tempo of his team's play in midfield with his short, efficient passing game, which made him link up the defence with the attack efficiently after winning back possession.

Despite his small status, his physical strength, along with his low centre of gravity, gave him outstanding balance on the ball in limited spaces, which led him to retain possession against more physical opponents. In other words, his tackling and positional sense were a joy to behold as he routinely stopped players who were stronger, quicker and/or flashier than him.

Apart from his defensive skills, Makélélé was recognized for his tenacity, awareness, consistency, and strong mentality. Makélélé’s role will live on the field, but no one will ever do it quite like him.

Makelele legal issues

In the spring of 2004, Makélélé began dating French model Noémie Lenoir who gave birth to a boy, Kelyan (born 24 January 2005) but their relationship had been broken since 2009.

Noémie Lenoir had serious relationship problems with Makelele then and went round to his house in La Celle-Saint-Cloud and confronted with Makelele. According to Makelele she grabbed him by the neck and caused him some nasty scratches.

In self-defence, he ostensibly hit her back, so she got some serious jaw injuries. She was rushed to the Andre-Mignot hospital in Chesnay where doctors said she would be off work for at least four days. She probably had a very serious jaw injury but was recovered after a while.

Detectives at La Celle-Saint-Cloud police station in the Yvelines department just outside the French capital meanwhile confirmed that both Makelele and Miss Ojeer had made formal complaints against each other.

Makelele claimed she had intruded on his property without his consent, and then attacked him and alleged assault and trespass. The woman claimed that she was assaulted as well.

Makelele has told police that he had split up with Miss Ojeer, and that he had not wanted her anywhere near his property. She, in turn, told police that she just wanted to collect her clothes and other personal items.

Besides Makelele denied playing any role in Lenoir's suicide attempt, saying he was 'absolutely astonished' by it when in May 2010, Lenoir attempted to commit suicide outside Makélélé's Paris home by consuming a deadly amount of drugs and alcohol.

Reports after the suicide attempt suggested that it was linked to Makélélé ultimately calling it quits with Lenoir and moving on with his then-pregnant fiancee, which he strongly rejected.
