Paolo Rossi made his debut in professional football with Juventus in

Coppa

Italia

in 1973. Juventus reached the final but couldn't win the cup, so Rossi's first medal was silver. Two years after joining Juventus, in order to gain some experience and time to play, he left the Old Lady on a loan contract to Como football club.

After many years of struggle between

Serie

C

and Serie B, Como reached a promotion to Serie A in 1975. A revival in the 1970s, saw the club emerge as contenders for promotion to Serie A, this was achieved in but despite the best efforts of players such as Alessandro Scanziani, they would last only a season. The young Paolo Rossi finally made it to Serie A and appeared in six matches for Como. He had mostly played right wing role and didn't score any goals.

When he turned 20, his career breakthrough happened. In 1976, Paolo Rossi joined Vicenza in Serie B. Giovan Battista Fabbri, Vicenza's manager changed his role to center forward and made him a crucial part of the team's lineup. Fabbri's trust in Paolo Rossi payed off and in 36 appearances in Serie B, he scored 21 goals for Vicenza. Vicenza became champion of the Serie B and promoted to Serie A and Paolo Rossi won the Serie B best scorer award.

In the following season, Rossi scored his first goal in Serie A, plus twenty three more goals in only 30 matches. In that season, he won the Capocannoniere award for top scorer in Serie A. One of the interesting facts about Paolo Rossi is that he was the first player to win the top scorer award in Serie B and Serie A in consecutive seasons. Having a machine gun like Paolo Rossi in the vanguard positions reached Vicenza to unbelievable second place in Serie A, right after their promotion from Serie B. That meant UEFA Cup qualification for Vincenza. Polo Rossi's amazing performance in 1977–78 led to his first national team debut. Paolo Rossi's age was 22.

First world cup

Enzo Bearzot called Rossi's for 1978 World Cup in Argentina. Enzo Bearzot started his managerial career as the assistant of Giovan Battista Fabbri. At the 1978 World Cup, his team had and unlikely style of play for Italy.

With individual skill of his three forward players, Roberto Bettega, Franco Causio, and Paolo Rossi at the center, Azzurri showed lovely offensive performances. In the first match, Rossi scored his first national goal against France and led to winning the match. In the second fixture of the group stage, Hungary was the second victim of Paolo Rossi. In the third match, Italy defeated the host, Argentina, and reached the next round as the first team with three victories.

The next round was also another group stage. Italy finished second after Netherland and could not reach the final. Rossi scored one goal against Austria that let to Italy's only win in the second phase. Italy lost third place in play off and finished the World Cup without a medal. But Paolo Rossi was awarded Silver Ball for the second best player in the World Cup.

Dark days

In 1978, Vicenza paid 2,612 billion lire to Juventus to gain full permanent ownership of Paolo Rossi. As one of the important facts about Paolo Rossi, we can mention this deal that made him the world's most expensive player. Despite 15 goals from Rossi, Vicenza relegated to Serie B. He joined Perugia on loan.

Perugia finished the previous season in second place after

Milan

. The 1979–80 season of Serie A was under the influence of a match fixing scandal. The media named it Totonero. AC Milan relegated for the first time, due to connection to match fixing activities. Paolo Rossi was accused to being involved in betting and match fixing.

He received a three years ban from football. That meant he could not participate in the upcoming European Cup hosting by Italy. Italy again finished in fourth place. Rossi always claimed to be innocent and victim of injustice.

The return of the Pablito

Despite the ban, Juventus purchased Polo Rossi for the second time in 1981. His sentence was deducted to two years and he capped in three matches at the end of the season and scored his first goal for Juventus. The club was celebrating the second star on the logo after the 20th Serie A championship in 1981–82 season.

In the first group stage round Paolo Rossi didn't score any goals but Italy finished second in the group after Poland and got into the next round. After poor performances in the three first matches, Bearzot announced the so-called silenzio stampa (press silence) in order to avoid the rising criticism from the Italian press.

In 1982, World Cup's second round, 12 teams were supposed to compete in four groups of three. In the hardest of groups ever, there were Argentina, Brazil, and Italy. In the first match, Diego Maradona and Mario Kempes could not do anything to stop Italy from winning the Argentina. Brazil had one of the strongest line-ups in football history with Zico, Falcao, Eder, Cerezo, and Doctor Socrates. Brazil won Argentina, three to one. So, the winner of the match between Italy and Brazil could go to the knockout phase.

In one of the most memorable matches in World Cup history, Rossi scored an early goal in the fifth minute. Seven minutes later Socrates scored the equalizer for Brazil. But later in 25th minute of the game Paolo Rossi scored another goal. Brazil's constant attacks could not penetrate Italy's defense wall and goalkeeper Dino Zoff behind them blocked all the Brazilian shots at goal. On 68 minutes, Falcao scored the second equalizer in the game.

With this result Brazil would have been through on goal difference. But in 74th minute, Paolo Rossi completed his hat trick and finished the game for Brazil. In the semi final, Italy faced Poland. This time Italy won the match with Paolo Rossi's brace and reached the final.

The final match was between Italy and West Germany in Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The First half of the final was goalless. In the second half Rossi scored the first goal in 57th minute of the game. Tardelli and Altobelli scored two other goals, making the late German goal useless. Scoring six goals made Paolo Rossi top scorer of the tournament, one goal more than Karl Heinz Rummenigge. Paolo Rossi won the Golden Boot award and Golden Ball award for the best player of the World Cup.

Rossi's accomplishments in Spain gained him the title of European Footballer of the Year, and World Player of the Year in 1982, as well as the 1982 Onze d'Or Award.

Late years

In 1982–83 season, Juventus finished second after Roma in the Serie A table. Paolo Rossi's stats were not as good as his time in Vicenza. He caped in 23 matches and scored only seven goals in Serie A. But his five goals in Coppa Italia helped Juventus to win the title. His six goals in the European cup brought Juventus to the final match, where they lost to Hamburg.

It was good considering Paolo Rossi's age.

After leaving Juventus, he joined the other Italian giant, AC Milan. Paolo Rossi played in 20 Serie A matches for Milan and scored four goals. Half of the goals were in Milan's derby against Inter. The next season was his last one in Serie A. He ended his career at
