"Mbappe deserves France captaincy", says Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has defended Didier Deschamps' decision to appoint Kylian Mbappe as the new captain of France.

After weeks of speculation following Hugo Lloris' retirement from international football after the 2022 World Cup, Kylian Mbappe was announced as the new France captain on Tuesday. Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann will also be France's new vice-captain.

Ahead of the game against the Netherlands in the euro 2024 qualifiers round on Friday, Liverpool defender Konate said Mbappe deserved captaincy and he will be a good captain for France.

"Even if I had a say in this, it would not change a thing. It’s the coach’s decision but I’m very happy,"

he told Eurosport.

"Honestly, Kylian deserves it. We’re unanimous on this. He deserves it with what he’s done at the World Cup and with PSG as well.

"He’s a very good leader, on and off the pitch. He’s a young lad who loves to laugh and have fun, nothing more. He’s a very good person. Some may think he’s arrogant. It’s something I was asked about in my club and elsewhere. To them, I say ‘Are you crazy? He’s so nice.’ Of course, he will be a good skipper.”

The 24-year-old Mbappe is the ninth PSG player in history to wear France’s captaincy armband.

France also will play with Ireland on Monday in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
