Bilbao legend Fernando Llorente retires from football at the age of 37

Being without a club since the end of the last season, the 37-year-old striker confirmed he's putting an end to his 18-year senior career.

Progressing through the youth ranks before making his first-team debut for Athletic Bilbao in 2005,

Fernando Llorente

scored 85 goals for the Basque side before joining Juventus in 2013. He had spells at Sevilla, Tottenham Hotspur, and Napoli before his most recent spell at Eibar last season.

However, after being without a club since last summer, former Spain international revealed to

Movistar+

he will not continue playing football as he will instead "keep fit by playing padel."

Llorente grew up in the La Rioja municipality of Rincón de Soto. In this place, football was the order of the day. Funes (1994–1995) and River Ebro were where El Rey León began his football career (1995-1996). He progressed through the different youth ranks of these clubs when playing for them, eventually becoming one of the most important offensive youth players.

Llorente joined Athletic Bilbao's youth system when he was 11 years old, due to his Navarrese ancestry. El Rey León was dubbed a "Bilbao legend" after spending eight years with the club. He joined Juventus in 2013 and won Serie A in his first season.
