Fernando Llorente Career

El Rey León spent several seasons with the club's junior teams, playing alongside Fernando Amorebieta before joining their Tercera División farm team Basconia in 2003. He steadily progressed, earning him a move to Bilbao Athletic in Segunda División B as Athletic's reserves.

Llorente signed a new contract until June 2011 on July 13, 2006, with a buyout option of between €30 and 50 million. After Aritz Aduriz, Joseba Etxeberria, and veteran Ismael Urzaiz, he began the season as the club's fourth-choice striker.

Llorente scored six goals in as many pre-season matches in preparation for the 2007–08 season, including one against

Numancia

in the Caja Duero Trophy. His performances led to him being named Athletic's first-choice striker, and despite a shaky start to the season, he finished with 11 league goals as the team finished in mid-table.

He scored four goals in two games against

Valencia

, both of which were convincing victories, and he also scored against Barcelona, Villarreal, and Atlético Madrid.

Llorente's refusal to sign a new contract with Athletic Bilbao in August 2012 fueled rumors that he will leave. He got into an altercation with manager Marcelo Bielsa after a 2–0 Basque derby loss at

Real Sociedad

on September 29th, in which he was a late substitute; two days later, he walked out of training early and was sent to practice with the youth squad, and as a result, his relationship with the club's fans and president Josu Urrutia deteriorated further.

Athletic announced on 3 January 2013 that Llorente will be in negotiations with Juventus. Giuseppe Marotta, the Italians' sporting director, announced on the 21st that he was "very confident" that the player will join on July 1, with Urrutia reportedly refusing to let him go during the January transfer window.

Three days later, the club revealed the deal, stating that he would sign a four-year contract when his contract with Bilbao expired on July 1st and that his agent would be paid €3.038 million.

In his final season with Athletic, El Rey León scored just 5 goals in 36 competitive matches, mostly as a back-up for Aduriz. After passing a medical at Juventus, Llorente became a Juventus player on July 1, 2013.

He was assigned the number 14 shirt and made his Serie A debut on September 22, scoring his first goal in a 2–1 home win over Hellas Verona. Llorente signed a three-year deal with

Sevilla

on August 27, 2015, with a €20 million buyout clause.

Three days later, he made his league debut, playing the entire 90 minutes in a 0–3 home loss to Atlético Madrid. On September 20, he scored his first goal for the club in a 2–1 defeat to Celta at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

Despite his Champions League performance, Llorente's contract expired on June 30, 2019, and Tottenham has yet to make an official comment on his situation.

His name was included in the Premier League's released players list submitted on 7 June 2019 (before he was officially released), and his profile was later omitted from the first-team squad list on the website for the upcoming season.

Udinese's striker was still used in the super-sub role, as he had been at Tottenham; despite rarely starting, he was often brought on in the second half of games to cause problems for tired opposition defenses with his physical presence. Llorente signed a one-and-a-half-year deal with Udinese on January 27, 2021.

El Rey León scored five goals for Spain at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, earning him the silver boot as the tournament's second top scorer. He has also represented his country at the under-17 and under-21 levels.

During the 2009–10 season, Llorente was not picked because del Bosque preferred Alvaro Negredo. He was, however, picked as a third-choice striker for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where he appeared in one match for the eventual champions, the final thirty minutes of a 1–0 round of 16 victories over Portugal.

Llorente was one of seven players to be left out of the final World Cup squad. He has played five times for the unofficial Basque Countryside, making his debut against Cameroon in 2005 and scoring once against Catalonia the following year at the Camp Nou. In December 2007, he made his last appearance. Llorente agreed to a one-and-a-half-year contract with Udinese on January 27, 2021.
