Matheus Cunha joins Wolves from Atletico on a loan deal with an obligation to buy
The 23-year-old striker joins Lopetegui’s Wolverhampton on Christmas day in a deal that could cost up to €40m
Although it was
already confirmedby the player and Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui, Matheus Cunha now officially joins Wolves from Atletico Madrid. This is structured to be a loan deal that includes a €40m obligation to buy clause for Wolves.
Cunha becomes Lopetegui’s first signing at Molineux as the Spaniard took charge of
Wolvesonly a short period before the World Cup.
After making a name for himself at Hertha Berlin, Cunha joined Atletico in 2021 to take the next big step in his career but he never managed to impress Simeone enough to make him a regular. Things became worse for Cunha this season as he didn’t manage to score a single goal in his 17 appearances for the club, most of which were coming off the bench.
seemingly fired back at Atleti manager Simeone when he talked about the importance of “feeling loved” in his farewell post to Atletico fans. Wolves, Aston Villa and even Arsenal were interested in signing the Olympic 2020 Gold medalist but Wolves has now won the race to sign the striker.
"The Brazilian international flew to the UK and completed his medical earlier in the week, finalising a loan move which will automatically become a permanent deal until 2027, should certain clauses be triggered,"
an official statement from the Wolves read.
Cunha will be available to make his debut for the Wolves against Aston Villa on January 4.
