Thierry Henry among the candidates for Belgium job

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is among the candidates to replace Roberto Martinez as Belgium's manager.

According to Sport, Thierry Henry is one of the favourites to become the new

Belgium

manager. Sport newspaper claims that the Belgium football federation is thinking of appointing Henry alongside Thomas Vermaelen as part of a two-pronged coaching team.

Former goalkeeper Michel Preud’homme and Burnley manager Vincent Kompany are other candidates. Belgian channel RTBF has also reported that Thierry Henry and Vincent Kompany are early favourites for the post.

The Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, who will leave the team after the World Cup, has also recently said that he is open to taking over Belgium's job.

Belgium had a disappointing

World Cup

and was knocked out in the group stage. Roberto Martinez confirmed he will leave the Belgium team after six years. Their World Cup campaign had been overshadowed by tensions in the squad, with players reportedly clashing in the dressing room after the defeat against Morocco. Also both Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne publicly said that Belgium's current team is no longer good enough to challenge for the World Cup.

Henry began his coaching career with Arsenal's youth teams in February 2015. In August 2016, Henry became the second assistant coach of the Belgium national team and started to work alongside Roberto Martínez. Henry become Monaco’s manager in October 2018 but was sacked after just 20 games in charge.

The former

Barcelona

star was appointed as Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact manager in 2019 but after 14 months decided to step down from his role and rejoined the coaching staff of Belgium prior to the Euro 2020.
