Bayern Munich's Lucas Hernandez open to Atletico Madrid return

Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez would be happy to return to his former club Atletico Madrid.

Hernandez joined Bayern Munich from Atletico in 2019 for €80m to become one of the most expensive defenders in history.

He has scored two goals in 104 matches for Bayern. Hernandez has won 9 major trophies with Bayern including three Bundesliga titles and one Champions League in 2020. The 26-year-old defender also won the World Cup with France in 2018.

Hernandez’s contract with Bayern will expire in 2024 and in an interview with Partidazo Cope he did not rule out a return to his former club.

“If one day the option of returning to Atletico arises, why not? I would like it to happen. It’d be a nice thing”.

“Atletico Madrid is the club that gave me everything. I’m an academy product and I’ve always loved the team. Since I left I’ve wished them the best.

“That I am now at Bayern Munich is partly thanks to Atletico. They bet on me when I was little and gave me everything”.

According to the German press, Bayern is open to extending his contract, and Hernandez also wants a new long-term contract. Sky Sports reports that a new round of talks between the two parties is planned but Bayern is not in a hurry right now.

Hernandez currently is out of action due to injury and will miss the Champions League clash with Barcelona on Wednesday but it is expected he will be fit before the World Cup.
