Oxford Dictionary updated with phrases by Ferguson and Mourinho

Oxford English Dictionary has published their most recent quarterly update, in which they expanded their footballing phrases with Ferguson's “squeaky bum time” and Mourinho's “park the bus”.

First used by

Sir Alex Ferguson

in 2003, the Oxford dictionary defines 'Squeaky bum time' as

"A particularly tense period of time, esp. one leading up to the climax of a competition or event."

Ferguson first used the term discussing

Manchester United

's rivalry with Arsenal 20 years ago. He said:

"[Arsenal] have a replay against Chelsea and if they win it they would face a semi-final three days before playing us in the league. But then they did say they were going to win the Treble, didn’t they? It’s squeaky bum time and we’ve got the experience now to cope.

Meanwhile,

Jose Mourinho

's "park the bus", which was the style of his overtly pragmatic defensive football at

Chelsea

, is defined as: "To play in a very defensive way, typically by having the majority of outfield players close to their own goal and showing little attacking intent."

After becoming iconic pieces of Premier League history, the Oxford dictionary decided to add these two phrases among a 15-strong addition ahead of the

2022 World Cup

.
