Adel Fathi slams Boehly for 'ignorant' statement: "Salah is our son"

Mohamed Salah's first club, Al Mokawloon, is angry that Todd Boehly said the Liverpool star came up through Chelsea's youth program.

The Egyptian international played for

Chelsea

between 2014 and 2016, although he didn't get there until he'd already broken through in his native country's junior system and made his European debut with

FC Basel

.

New Blues owner Boehly reportedly told SALT, “We have one of the best academies in the world. If you look at what our academy has developed, our academy is Mo Salah,

Kevin De Bruyne

. More recently Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Mason Mount, Trevoh Chalobah.”

Al Mokawloon

board member Mohamed Adel Fathi responded to Boehly's statements on

Facebook

, writing, “What the new owner of Chelsea says shows a lack of understanding. Mohamed Salah is a source of pride for the Al Mokawloon Club and Egyptian and Arab football, and we are honoured that he is one of our sons. The whole world knows Salah's career and how he started with us, but it seems that the owner of Chelsea is the only person in the world who is ignorant of this information.”

Over the course of three years, Salah made 44 appearances for Al Mokawloon and scored 12 goals. He stayed for another 18 months in Switzerland before joining Chelsea in January 2014. After only 19 games with the Blues, he went to Italy to rebuild his name and returned to English football in 2017 with Liverpool, where he became a club icon and won the Premier League, the Champions League, and the Golden Boot.

The 30-year-old striker has gotten off to a sluggish start to the 2022-23 season, but he recently signed a new contract with Liverpool and will be eager to regain his form when club play resumes after the international break.
