Three months before World Cup Morocco fires head coach Halilhodzic
Having been dismissed by the Ivory Coast before South Africa 2010 and Japan before Russia 2018, this is the third time the Bosnian leads a team to the World Cup and gets fired before the tournament gets underway.
(FRMF) confirmed the Bosnian was dismissed as Morocco's head coach after he helped them secure qualification for the upcoming Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The 69-year-old Bosnian played for Yugoslavia at Spain's 1982 World Cup and was in charge of Algeria at the World Cup in Brazil eight years ago. His feud with several key players, including Chelsea's star
Hakim Ziyechwho refused to rejoin the team following announcing his retirement led fans to voice their dissatisfaction with Halilhodzic’s decisions and finally his departure.
“Given the differences and divergent visions between the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and national coach Vahid Halilhodzic regarding the Qatar 2022 World Cup preparation, the two parties decided to separate by mutual consent,”
the statement from FRMF reads.
Walid Regragui
is expected to be named as Halilhodzic's successor ahead of
Morocco's World Cup journey. The former Wydad head coach, Regragui, became the second Moroccan manager to win the African Champions League after leading
Wydad ACto win its 3rd CAF Champions League title last year.
Morocco will be in Group F of the Qatar World Cup with 2018 finalists
Croatia, Belgium, and Canada. They will kick start their World Cup adventure on November 23 against Croatia.
