De Laurentiis claims he will not sign African players

The president of Napoli has made controversial comments about the recruitment of African players.

Napoli

president Aurelio De Laurentiis has announced that his club will not sign African players unless the players agree not to play in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Last season, Napoli did not have Andre-Franck Zambo Anguissa and

Kalidou Koulibaly

during the games, and the latter, who also won the championship, left Naples for

Chelsea

at the end of the season. Victor Osimhen was another player who could participate in the competition but was not in the Cameroon national team due to injury. The next AFCON will be held in Ivory Coast in 2024 and the Napoli boss has insisted that he will only sign African players on the condition that they do not feature in the competition.

"I told them: lads, don't talk to me about Africans anymore.

"I love them, but either they sign something confirming they'll back out of playing the Africa Cup of Nations, or otherwise between that tournament, the World Cup qualifiers in South America, these players are never available!

"We are the idiots who pay salaries only to send them all over the world playing for others."
