Portugal 2-2 Switzerland: Women's Euro 2022 Group C

The battle of the Group C underdogs ended in a tie thanks to a goal from Jessica Silva. Portugal came back from being down 2-0 to Switzerland to get a point.

Francisco Neto's team, only at the finals due to Russia's expulsion, came back with goals from

Diana Gomes

and Silva to draw 2-2. Telma Encarnacao's late shot was stopped by a post.

With reigning champions Netherlands and

Sweden

to come, that may not be enough. Both sides knew before kickoff the game was a must-win. Sow grabbed a loose ball 25 yards away and hammered a shot across the scrambling goalie

Ines Pereira

and inside the far post in the opening minute. Kiwic timed her run well to head in Ramona Bachmann's free-kick with less than five minutes gone.

Shell-shocked

Portugal

gradually forced their way into the game with striker Silva prominent, but they seldom looked like cutting the lead as Bachmann and Viola Calligaris marshaled the Swiss defense. Silva blasted over seven minutes after the restart after turning cleverly on the outside of the box, but seconds after Bachmann found space on the left but struck over the face of goal with Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic asking for a pull-back.

Portugal drew level in the 58th minute when Gomes bundled in the rebound after Swiss keeper

Gaelle Thalmann

saved his header from Ana Borges' corner. Silva beat Calligaris to Tatiana Pinto's cross and equalized after 8 minutes.

Dolores Silva

's 70th-minute free-kick was saved by Thalmann, and Diana Silva missed two decent chances before Geraldine Reuteler and Sow were stopped by the woodwork and Catarina Amado, respectively. Encarnacao's final-minute attempt hit the post, preventing her from winning.
