“He’s the same as Grealish” Rodgers hails Arsenal-linked Maddison

The Gunners are interested in a summer move for the midfielder, but a transfer might prove to be costly.

Since his move from Norwich in 2018,

James Maddison

has established himself as a key player for Leicester City. His performances at the King Power Stadium have attracted interest from a host of European clubs, with Arsenal being the main suitor for the 24-year-old.

Many observers have suggested that Leicester will demand a figure close to Manchester City’s free for Jack Grealish. The Foxes boss

Brendan Rodgers

responded to the comparisons between the two England internationals.

"I think they are both close. They are both very talented players.

"Stylistically, I think they're the same. They are both creators. But I would say they are both totally different. One is a dribbler - one commits people down the sides.”

Maddison featured in 31 league matches for the Foxes last season, scoring 8 goals and providing 7 assists. The midfielder was also included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euros, but he ultimately missed the tournament due to injury.

"James is more central and he's more of a passer. So yes, they are both creative players but stylistically they are both very different.

"Everyone could see today how hard James works for the team, his quality and how he takes the ball. His eye for the last pass.

"He is a wonderful talent and I thought he was excellent tactically because they really challenge you in that respect. I thought he was brilliant."

Rodgers added:

"James was unfortunate in that he suffered from a number of injuries which curtailed his progress last season.

"This will be a big year for him, trying to maintain that fitness - you need a little bit of luck with that as well.

"All he can do is play to the highest possible level for Leicester and see where it takes him."

Following their

Community Shield victory

against Manchester City, the Foxes will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the opening game of their 2020-21 league campaign.
