Borussia Dortmund Top Scorers of All Time

Who are Borussia Dortmund top scorers of all time? One big difference between the list of Dortmund highest goal scorers of all time with other teams’ top scorers list is that three of the four Dortmund scorers who top the list are dead. A record in its own right? Maybe!

And the fourth one who actually occupies the second position on the list of Dortmund top goal scorers ever is a retired footballer. That actually repeats itself as one goes down the list.

We mean the number of dead and retired footballers on the list of

all-time top goal scorers in Dortmund history

is even more than alive ones! In fact, from among the ten footballers on top of the list only 3 are alive!

Highest Goal Scorers in Dortmund of All Time

We are now to top scorers in

Dortmund

of all time. Who might they be? From here, we can just say Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich is among them but, indeed, not on top of the list.

Manfred Burgsmuller (158 Goals)

Number one on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time, Manfred Burgsmuller was a German footballer who served Borussia Dortmund between 1976 and 1983 scoring a total of 158 goals for them 135 of which were league goals.

Burgsmuller is actually the first dead footballer on the list of

Dortmund highest goal scorers of all time

who also served other German clubs like Werder Bremen, FC Nurnberg, and Bayer Uerdingen during his career.

Only the number of league goals Burgsmuller scored for Borussia Dortmund (135) are actually 10, 4, and 1.5 times higher than the number of goals he scored for FC Nurnberg,

Werder Bremen

, and Bayer Uerdingen respectively, let alone the number of goals he scored in total for Dortmund (158) and all the league goals he scored during his career (330) - as you see almost half of these goals were scored for Dortmund.

And Burgsmuller scored all his 158 goals for Dortmund in the 252 appearances he made for them which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.6 meaning that he scored 3 goals in every 5 appearances he made for the German club.

However, the number of goal assists Burgsmuller made for Dortmund during his career are quite trivial in regard to the number of goals he scored: Only 2 which is by far lower than the number of assists other footballers on the list of Dortmund top goal scorers ever made or have made.

Michael Zorc (158 Goals)

Sharing the first position on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time with Manfred Burgsmuller, Michael Zorc is a retired German footballer who only served

Borussia Dortmund

during his footballing career.

So, as a matter of fact, he has scored all his league goals (131) for the same club, too, and the rest (27) have actually been scored in other competitions including European ones again for the same club.

Zorc scored all his 131 leagues goals in the 463 appearances he made for Borussia Dortmund between 1981 and 1998. That actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.28 meaning that the 58-year-old retired German midfielder has scored almost 3 goals in every ten appearances he has made for Dortmund which is two times lower than Burgsmuller’s ratio of 0.6, although he shares the same position with Burgsmuller on the list of Dortmund highest goal scorers ever.

However, considering that Zorc was actually a midfielder during his footballing time justifies his lower ratio, and although he’s not the footballer with the most number of goal assists on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time, he has actually compensated for his lower ratio - at least compared to that of Burgsmuller - with the number of assists he has made during his footballing career: 31 which is 15 times higher than the 2 assists Burgsmuller made during his time.

Lothar Emmerich (148 Goals)

The second dead footballer on the list of

Dortmund top scorers of all time

, Lothar Emmerich scored 148 goals during his footballing career for Dortmund which actually puts him on the second position on the list and with almost a narrow margin of 10 goals from the first position occupied by Manfred Burgsmuller and Michael Zorc each with 158 goals.

Emmerich scored all his 148 goals in the 249 appearances he made for Dortmund which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of almost 0.6 meaning that he actually scored 3 goals in every 5 appearances he made for the German club.

And he also provided 43 goal assists during this time which is more than the number of assists both Manfred Burgsmuller and Lothar Emmerich made for Dortmund during their careers.

From among 148 goals Emmerich scored for Dortmund 126 were at league level which actually comprises 85% of all his goals for the German club. One interesting fact about Emmerich is that he served Dortmund for half of his career - between 1960 and 1969 - and he also scored almost half of his league goals for them: 126 out of 280 goals - if he only scored 14 more goals, that would be exactly half of the goals he scored at league level.

Timo Konietzka (145 Goals)

Another dead footballer on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time, Timo Konietzka is also the first footballer on the list with dual nationality - he’s both German and Swiss. Konietzka scored all his 145 goals in the 191 appearances he made for

Borussia Dortmund

across all competitions between 1958 and 1965.

That actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.76 - highest on the list - meaning that he scored almost 4 goals (exactly 3.8 goals) in every 5 appearances he made for the German club.

Konietzka is among the footballers who have managed more teams than they have played for: He actually managed 7 teams while he only played for 3 teams. And from these 3 teams, Konietzka served Dortmund for more than half of his career and scored for them 4 times higher than the other two clubs he served, namely TSV 1860 Munich and

FC Winterthur

.

Konietzka actually scored 121 goals for Dortmund at league level which comprises 83% of all the goals he scored for the German club. It is as he scored only 30 goals at league level for the other two clubs mentioned above. And the passed German footballer provided 15 goal assists during his service to the Black and Yellows.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (141 Goals)

And now we get to the first alive footballer on the list of

Dortmund top scorers of all time

! Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and he is also the first non-German footballer on the list - he’s actually a French footballer with Gabonese origin.

Although Aubameyang is currently playing for Arsenal, he has served Borussia Dortmund more than any other club during his career: 5 years from 2013 to 2018 where he scored 141 goals for them across all competitions.

And from all the 141 goals

Aubameyang

has scored for Dortmund 98 have been scored at league level which actually make up 69.5% of all his goals for the German club.

The 31-year-old French forward has scored all his 141 goals in the 213 appearances he has made for Dortmund which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.66 meaning that he has scored a little bit more than 3 goals in every 5 appearances he has made for Dortmund; almost as good as other footballers that have already been mentioned in this post.

Jurgen Schutz (133 Goals)

Yet another dead footballer on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time! Like Lothar Emmerich, Jurgen Schutz also served Borussia Dortmund for half of his career but in two periods: once from 1959 to 1963 and another time from 1969 to 1972 which adds up to 7 years in total.

And during these years, Schutz scored 133 goals in the 205 appearances he made for Dortmund which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.65 meaning that he scored almost 4 goals in every 6 appearances he made for the German club.

One interesting fact about Schutz is that although he served 6 other clubs than Dortmund during his career including

AS Roma

and Torino FC, he only scored 20 goals in total for all of them - each getting a share of 3.3 goals from all his goals on average.

This is as Schutz scored 133 goals alone for Dortmund during his career which is more than six times higher than all the goals he has scored for other clubs during his career!

Marco Reus (129 Goals)

The first and only player on our list of

Dortmund top goal scorers ever

who is currently serving the same club (Dortmund), Marco Reus has actually scored 129 goals for Dortmund in the 266 appearances he has had for them across all competitions which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.48 meaning that he has scored almost one goal in every two appearances he has made for the Black and Yellows.

Reus has been serving Dortmund since 2012 which is more than half of his career that actually started in 2006 with the second division club, Rot Weiss Ahlen II.

And the number of goals Reus has scored for Dortmund at league level (91) are actually 2.5 times higher than the club he served before Dortmund, namely Borussia Mönchengladbach - he scored 36 goals for them, and much higher than the club he served before Mönchengladbach, namely Rot Weiss Ahlen for whom he scored 5 goals only.

The number of goals Reus has scored for

Borussia Dortmund

at league level (91) comprises 70% of all his goals for the German club (129) in all competitions. Reus has also made 82 goal assists for Dortmund up to this date which is actually one of the highest on the list of Dortmund top goal scorers ever.

And one thing to remember about Reus is that he’s still in Dortmund’s service. That means he has still time to increase the number of goals he has scored for the club and rank better on the list.

Stephane Chapuisat (123 Goals)

The second Swiss footballer on the list of

highest goal scorers in Dortmund of all time

, Stephane Chapuisat has scored 123 goals in the 284 appearances he has made for Dortmund between 1991 and 1999 which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.43 meaning that he has scored 2 goals in every 5 appearances he has made for the German club.

Chapuisat actually played 8 years of his 20-year career for Dortmund and during this time scored 102 goals at league level for them. That actually comprises 82% of all the goals he has scored for the German club.

The Swiss footballer scored 262 goals in total at league level for several clubs such as Bayer Uerdingen and Grasshoppers, and if he scored 29 more goals for Dortmund, we could say he had scored exactly half of his career goals for the German club.

Alfred Kelbassa (111 Goals)

Another dead footballer on the list of all-time top goal scorers in Dortmund history, Alfred Kelbassa scored 111 goals for

Borussia Dortmund

in the 189 appearances he made for them across all competitions between 1954 and 1963 which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of almost 0.6 meaning that the passed German footballer scored 3 goals in every 5 appearances he made for the Black and Yellows.

The interesting fact about Kelbassa is that he played for full 90 minutes in all the appearances he made for Dortmund which means he was never substituted off the pitch when playing for the German club.

He also provided no goal assists during the time he served Dortmund; a rare record on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time. We mean you find only few footballers among Dortmund top scorers of all time who played or have played for full 90 minutes in all their appearances and they made or have made no goal assists.

And from among all the 111 goals that Kelbassa scored for Dortmund 104 goals were scored at league level. That actually comprises 93% of all the goals the passed German footballer scored for Dortmund - highest on the list up to this point.

And like some other footballers mentioned above, Kelbassa served Borussia Dortmund for half of his career and scored half of his career league goals for the German club.

Robert Lewandowski (103 Goals)

And finally here’s the beloved Polish footballer who is not only on the list of

highest goal scorers in Dortmund of all time but also on the list of

Bundesliga top scorers of all time

: Robert Lewandowski!

He’s also the second footballer on the list after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is currently playing for another club, namely Bayern Munich, but still is among all-time top goal scorers in Dortmund history.

And

Lewandowski

is also the last footballer on the list of

Dortmund highest goal scorers ever

to have scored more than 100 goals for the German club - actually 103 goals.

These number of goals have been scored in 187 appearances Lewandowski has made for Dortmund which actually get him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.55 meaning that the 32-year-old Polish footballer has scored a little bit more than 1 goal (exactly 1.1) in every 2 appearances he has made for the Black and Yellows.

From all the 103 goals Lewandowski has scored for Dortmund 71% (74 goals) have been scored at league level. This number of goals is twice as much as the number of goals the Polish footballer has scored for the two other clubs he served before Dortmund, namely

Znicz Pruszkow

and Lech Poznan, however, he has also served Dortmund twice as long as the two other clubs mentioned above, namely for four years.

And finally, Lewandowski is the first footballer on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time who has not scored the most number of goals in his career for Dortmund - he has scored more than twice as much goals for

Bayern Munich

at league level: 162 goals till now, and if you just consider all the goals Lewandowski has scored for Dortmund across all competitions (103), the number of goals he has scored for Bayern only at league level are still higher by a wide margin.

Reinhold Wosab (90 Goals)

Another retired footballer on the list of

Dortmund top scorers of all time

, Reinhold Wosab has scored 90 goals in the 270 appearances he has made for Borussia Dortmund between 1962 and 1971 which gets him an exact goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.3 meaning that he scored almost one goal in every three appearances he made for Dortmund.

Wosab has served Dortmund for more than half of his career but the number of goals he has scored for the German club at league level (74) are more than seven times higher than the goals he has scored for Borussia Dortmund; quite a prolific scorer but only for Dortmund!

And the number of goals Wosab has scored for Dortmund at league level comprises 82% of all the goals he has scored for the German club across all competitions.

Andreas Moller (88 Goals)

Part of the legendary German national team who won 1990 World Cup and Euro 96, Andreas Moller has served Borussia Dortmund more than any other club during his career.

He has actually played for almost half of his career for the German club and scored 71 goals for them only at league level which is more than two times higher than the number of goals he has scored for

Eintracht Frankfurt

(33) - actually the second club after Dortmund for whom Moller scored the most number of league goals during his career.

So, we’d better consider Moller more as a Dortmund player, although he has also served three other clubs, namely Juventus,

Schalke 04

and Eintracht Frankfurt, during his career.

Moller has scored all his 88 goals in the 301 appearances - one of the highest on the list - he has made for Dortmund which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.29 meaning that the retired German footballer has scored almost one goal in every three appearances he has made for the Black and Yellows.

And from all the 88 goals Moller has scored for Dortmund 71 have been scored at league level, as mentioned above. That actually comprises 80% of all the goals Moller has scored for Dortmund. The 53-year-old retired German footballer has also provided 85 goal assists for Dortmund during his career which is indeed one of the highest on the list of Dortmund top scorers of all time.

Aki Schmidt (88 Goals)

Another dead footballer on the list of

top scorers in Dortmund of all time

, Aki Schmidt actually shares the same position (11th) on the list with Andreas Moller with the 88 goals he scored for Dortmund during his career.

And all these 88 goals were scored in the 322 appearances Schmidt made for Dortmund which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.27 meaning that he scored a little bit more than goal in every 4 appearances he made for the Black and Yellows.

Schmidt is the second footballer after Michael Zorc on the list of Dortmund top goal scorers ever who only served Borussia Dortmund during his career. During this time, Schmidt made 163 appearances for the German club at league level and scored 67 goals for them which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.41 concerning his league activity.

And, one interesting fact about the German passed footballer is that he was never substituted on or off during his career meaning that he always played for 90 minutes if ever he was on the pitch.

Jan Koller (79 Goals)

The last but not the least on our list of Dortmund top scorers of all time, Jan Koller is also the first and only Czech player on the list who served Borussia Dortmund more than any other club during his career.

He’s actually a retired Czech footballer who served seven other clubs than Dortmund during his career with some of them being

Monaco

, Anderlecht, and Sparta Prague, however, as mentioned above, he served Dortmund more than any other club - actually 5 years - and he also scored for the German club more than any other club at league level: 59 goals which actually comprises 74% of all the goals Koller has scored for the Black and Yellows.

Koller scored all his 79 goals in the 184 appearances he made for Dortmund between 2001 and 2006 which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.43 meaning that he scored a little bit more than 2 goals in every 5 appearances he made for the German club.
