Michael O'Neill returns to Northern Ireland as the head coach
After his unsuccessful spell with Stoke City in Championship, the 53-year-old manager has been reappointed as Northern Ireland's head coach following the sacking of Ian Baraclough.
O'Neill
was in charge when they reached the last 16 of Euro 2016, their first tournament in 30 years, as he was in charge between December 2011 and April 2020.
Northern Ireland
discharged Ian Baraclough in October after he only managed to win four of his 22 competitive games as O'neil arrives on a five-and-a-half-year contract.
O'Neill said in a statement on Wednesday:
"I am delighted to be the Northern Ireland senior men's manager.
"I am excited to see what can be achieved with this group of players and can’t wait to be in front of the Green and White Army at the National Stadium once again."
From 2006 until 2008, O'Neill worked as a manager at Brechin City. He subsequently moved to Shamrock Rovers, where he won the Setanta Cup and two 'League of Ireland' crowns. He was appointed manager of Northern Ireland in 2011, and the team qualified for their first ever European Champions finals in 2016. O'Neill was named manager of Stoke City in November 2019.
