Ghana 0–2 Uruguay: A Victory That is Just Not Enough

Ghana and Uruguay faced each other in a revival of their World Cup 2010 quarter-final tie as the Africans eyed revenge against their South American rivals. Especially, as they needed to hold on for a draw while a victory was necessary for the Uruguayans.

Ghana's victory over the Koreans gave the African leverage to qualify as the group runner-up while Uruguayans had to win to qualify for the next round as the Africans had the chance to take the 2010 World Cup revenge from Luis Suarez’s side. Portugal was topping the group with 6 points, followed by 3-pointed Ghana as the Uruguayans suffered a disappointing start to the tournament, only gathering a draw from South Korea.

Despite Uruguay's bright start to the game, it was Ghana who got awarded a penalty in the 21st minute after the VAR check, however, Uruguay's goalkeeper Rochet

saved the penalty

he committed as Andre Ayew's penalty wasn't challenging. Just five minutes later,

Giorgian De Arrascaeta

scored the opener for Uruguay heading in a rebound from Ati-Zigi's save. De Arrascaeta comforted the Uruguayans as he completed his brace 6 minutes later to double the South Americans lead.

Ghana pushed to make a difference but Uruguay's solid defense leave them no chance. However, with South Korea winning the other match of the group, Uruguay got eliminated from the World Cup with the Koreans proceeding as the group's runners-up.
