Bayern Munich reveal they were 'close' to signing Haaland

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has revealed that they were close to signing Erling Haaland from Dortmund.

After months of speculation, at the end of last season, the 22-year-old

Haaland

decided to accept

Manchester City

’s offer and eventually he joined the Premier League champion in a deal worth €60 million.

Other big European clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona were also interested in signing him and now Bayern Munich's president has revealed that they also were close to signing the Norwegian star.

In an interview with

Bayern Media

Group, Hainer said:

”Haaland is interesting for every top club in the world and we had the best chances alongside Manchester City.”

“Compared to other top international clubs, we may have fewer financial opportunities, but we can score points throughout Europe with our identity,”

explained Hainer.

“With us, the players get their salary on time and are treated like family. We also offer prospects for titles, which is the most important thing for the players.”

Haaland has scored 23 goals in all competitions for Manchester City including 18 Premier League goals.

Bayern’s president also praised Julian Naggelsmann's decisions following Robert Lewandowski’s departure last summer.

“He recognized that he had to change something in this phase and installed Choupo-Moting as a center forward. The decision shows how flexible and willing to develop the Bayern coach is."

Hainer also was asked about the sponsorship contract with Qatar Airways which has been criticised by Bayern’s supporters.

“As I said before, we will discuss sponsorship after the World Cup. Our goal is for things to change through discussions, transparency and looking at things. We’re always looking for dialogue here.”
