Gundogan vows to take the knee with England following Hungary jeers

Hungary fans greeted England by jeers when the Three Lions took the knee on Saturday, which disappointed Gareth Southgate.

Ilkay Gundogan

promised that he would back

England

and take the knee on Tuesday following the Hungary fans’ jeering on Saturday.

England were defeated 1-0 in their Nations League Group A3 opener following Dominik Szoboszlai’s penalty in the second half at the Puskas Arena. This was the same venue where England players had to deal with racial abuse in September.

Hungary were going to play behind closed doors following last year’s racial abuse at Euro 2020. However, children came with adults to attend the game.

When England players took the knee, the fans booed them and

Gareth Southgate

was confused and disappointed at how they responded.

"The first thing is that is why we do it [take the knee], to try to educate people around the world. I have no idea why people would choose to boo that gesture,"

Southgate told Channel 4 after the game.

England will next go against

Germany

, who drew their game with

Italy

1-1, and Gundogan promised to support their rivals by taking the knee.

"We will go down on our knees together with the English because we want to support this whole initiative,"

Gundogan told reporters at Monday's pre-match news conference.

"We did this last year at the Euros and, of course, we will do it tomorrow too. I'm used to that from the English league, where we do it almost every match, so it's nothing new for me.

"We talked about it inside the team and we will support the opponent."
