Messi set to miss out on Argentina's upcoming World Cup qualifiers

Lionel Messi has been left out of Argentina's team for their forthcoming fixtures after taking longer than anticipated to recover from COVID-19.

Lionel Messi has been left out of

Lionel Scaloni

's newest Argentina roster as he recovers from a coronavirus infection.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker hasn't played in over a month, with his most recent appearance in the 1-1

Ligue 1

stalemate against Lorient on December 22.

During the mid-season break, he tested positive for COVID-19 while in Argentina, causing him to travel to France later than intended.

Messi was ready to make his comeback against Lyon on January 9, but PSG indicated he needed to complete his rehabilitation, and he subsequently missed Saturday's 2-0 victory against Brest.

While he stated last week that

"I have almost recovered,"

Messi did indicate on social media that getting over the sickness took

"longer than I thought

."

Given his circumstances, Argentina appears to have decided that jeopardizing Messi's recuperation or further interrupting his recovery is futile, given that they have already qualified for this year's World Cup.

Argentina will travel to Chile on Thursday before playing Colombia five days later, with both teams still competing for a spot in

Qatar 2022

In March, La Albiceleste will play Venezuela and Ecuador.
