‘Five top European clubs want to sign de Jong’ – de Jong’s father

Frenkie de Jong’s father has claimed that Europe’s top five teams have contacted him to enquire about signing his son, although he says a move is unlikely.

The former

Ajax

midfielder signed for

Barcelona

for €75 in 2019, but he has failed to live up to expectations at Camp Nou.

With Barcelona's financial difficulties continuing, they will aim to reduce their pay bill and bring in some revenue in each of the next two transfer windows, and De Jong may be available for sale as one of their most prized assets and his father says his son has attracted a lot of interests from European clubs.

However, John de Jong told Dutch publication

Algemeen Dagblad

that a move to

Manchester United

or

Bayern Munich

may not appeal to the 24-year-old

: "It's often bad weather there. Of course it's about football, but it does matter.

“Of course, I know that Barcelona needs money and a great offer for Frenkie could help, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Although, the five top European clubs have all called.”

De Jong remains a mainstay in the Barca starting XI, having made 19 appearances in all competitions this season.

New Barca boss

Xavi

has insisted De Jong is not for sale, saying:

‘Our goal is for Frenkie to be happy here.

‘We desperately need that type of player. He is definitely not in the shop window, rather the opposite. The idea is to make him stronger here.’
