Damien Duff quits role in Ireland coaching staff
Damien Duff has resigned from Republic of Ireland boss Stephan Kenny’s coaching staff.
The 41-year-old was added to Kenny’s backroom team in August alongside fellow assistant
Keith Andrews
after stepping down from a similar position at
Celtic
. He was expected to help the team in preparations for the World Cup qualification.
However, the former Blackburn, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Fulham midfielder is leaving after a matter of months.
Duff
said:
“I want to thank Stephen Kenny for the opportunity he gave me to coach with the senior Ireland team and I wish Stephen, Keith and the players all the very best of luck for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”
No explanation has been given for Duff's exit, but it is known that he was upset at the inquiry started in November last year by a video showed to the Irish players in front of their friend against England at Wembley.
Kenny
has not yet tasted success in his eight games in charge of the national team and aims to progress dramatically in the qualifying against Serbia, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Azerbaijan.
The manager said:
“Damien is an excellent coach as he proved in his time with us and his contribution to the Irish team was greatly appreciated by myself, my staff and the players and I wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
