Silva ruled out as he was injured with a knee ligament against Tottenham

Chelsea's veteran defender, Thiago Silva, suffered a knee ligament injury during their recent 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, according to a confirmation from the club.

Silva, who limped off just 19 minutes into the match, has not been given an official timeframe for his return; however, reports suggest that he could be out for as long as six weeks.

If this is the case,

Silva

will miss Chelsea's crucial Champions League last-16 second leg against Borussia Dortmund, and his participation in the quarter-finals, should the Blues advance, will also be in doubt.

Although

Chelsea

have several centre-back options, including Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, Trevoh Chalobah, and Benoit Badiashile, only the former three are eligible to play in the Champions League.

A Chelsea statement read:

"Having sustained a knee injury during the first half of Sunday's match against Tottenham Hotspur, Thiago underwent further assessment and a scan on his return to the training centre on Monday.

"Scan results from those assessments have confirmed damage to Thiago's knee ligaments and he will now work closely with the club's medical department during his rehabilitation to return to action as soon as possible."
