Pep Guardiola issues apology for "Steven Gerrard's slip" comments

Earlier, Man City's manager argued the moments cannot be taken away from them should they be found guilty of breaking financial rules, including Steven Gerrard's notorious slip against Chelsea in the 2013-14 season. The Spaniard issues an apology finding his comments unnecessary.

Premier League has accused

Manchester City

of over 100 breaches of financial rules between the seasons of 2009-10 and 2017-18. Man City won the title three times during that period.

In Man City's pre-match conference before their victory against Aston Villa,

Pep Guardiola

addressed Steven Gerrard's slip in Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Anfield in their 2013/14 title run-in, which resulted in City winning the league title with two points difference.

He said:

“I don’t know if we are responsible for Steven Gerrard slipping at Anfield. Was that our fault? I have respect for Steven Gerrard – but that moment belongs to us

.”

However, after City’s victory over Villa, Guardiola delivered an apology for his comments on

Steven Gerrard

, where he told a press conference:

“I apologise to Steven Gerrard for my unnecessary and stupid comments I said the last time about him.

“He (Gerrard) knows how I admire him and his career, what he has done for this country that I am living and training in.

“I am ashamed of myself, what I said – because he (Gerrard) doesn’t deserve it. I truly believe my comments in my previous press conference to defend my club but I didn’t represent my club well putting his name in these stupid comments.

“I apologise and I said to him (Gerrard) personally but I have to do it here as well. I’m so sorry for him, for Alex (his wife), kids and family, because it was stupid.”

City can rise to the top of the Premier League table with a victory over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
