Ajax’ Alvares longs for ‘a better competition’

Ajax’s Edson Alvares was one of the hot topics during the last transfer window but the midfielder was made to wait by Ajax after they turned down Chelsea’ offer for him.

The Mexican midfielder, who will be representing his country in the World Cup in a few weeks, has recently talked about the disappointment he felt, after his move to Chelsea was blocked by

Ajax

, but he remains optimistic about his future.

The 25-year-old midfielder who also played for the likes of Club America before moving to Ajax was subject to a deal in the region of €50 million from Chelsea, but Ajax denied the Blues’ offer, leaving Alvarez "very disappointed".

Aside from

Chelsea

,

Manchester United

who has Alvarez’ former coach managing them now, was one of his other suitors. Alvarez claims that he

"fought as far as I could"

but now that the window is closed, he is focused on Ajax.

"Of course, there was interest from Chelsea. Nobody expected that they would make another offer,"

Alvarez said

. "Ajax really couldn't go anywhere. They couldn't do anything more. They didn't have a player in my position."

Alvarez has backed that claim by performing admirably this season, being amongst Ajax’s best players, especially when it comes to defensive work, which may present him with bigger opportunities in the future.

"Eventually you are aware that everything changes. A better competition, a better life for yourself and for your family. Because that's what it's all about in the end,"

Alvarez said.

"I've always thought for myself that I'm here because of my love for football, but also for my family.

"On the other hand, it motivates me enormously that clubs of that size keep an eye on my matches, my actions. I am very disappointed, but I am convinced that sooner or later a big club will come for me."
