West Ham’s Ogbonna undergoes surgery for his ACL injury

Angelo Ogbonna

sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during

’s 3-2 win over

before the international break.

The defender seemed in discomfort in the first half and he was then treated by the team’s medical staff, with Craig Dawson being his replacement.

After the surgery, Ogbonna took to social media to announce that the procedure "went well" and show his appreciation for the supportive messages he had gotten.

He tweeted:

"The surgery went well and now the recovery begins... I can't wait to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.

"Thank you for all your messages of support. Today, even from here, I will support the Team! Come on you Irons."

Ogbonna was in the starting XI in every game under David Moyes’ reign before suffering the injury, proving essential to West-Ham’s strong start this season. His absence leaves only three senior centre-backs, Dawson, Issa Diop and Kurt Zouma, at Moyes’ disposal.

The West Ham manager said before their battle against Wolves on Saturday:

"I think most people who know much about injuries and listening to what the doctors say… cruciate injuries can take around about nine months.

"You only need to look at Virgil van Dijk, and people of that ilk, and how long it takes to recover.

"I don't think there is a quick return. I think there is a period of recovery time that has to be taken, so I think it will be hard for Angelo to be back this season."

The Italy international has become a mainstay in the team since making a move from

in 2015 and he featured in 200 matches for the Hammers.
