Messi is the first to net five goals in a Champions League match

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi has recently made history again.

Last night, the 33-year-old became the first player throughout the Champions League to net five goals in one match. OTD in 2012, his team defeated Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 at the Camp Nou.

But he's not the only player to bang five goals in one match across all the history of Europe's premier team competition.

"The most important thing tonight is that all these goals we scored take us one step closer to winning the Champions League, which is our objective,"

Messi

explained to

Uefa.com

on that victory night.

"We went out there wanting to ensure qualification for the quarter-finals and we achieved that.

"I have always said that it's fantastic when things come off for you like tonight and you play well, but only if you meet your aims for the match. That's what happened against Leverkusen. The team played very, very well, the performance had some beautiful moments and we scored lots of goals."

Besides that five goals,

Messi

is the only player in the UEFA Champions League age to top-score in three back-to-back campaigns.

The destructive forward, who lacks eight goals to become Barcelona's all-time top scorer, has scored six goals more than Mario Gomez in the Champions League scoring charts..
