Micky Mellon backs his players after St Mirren thrashing

Dundee United were defeated by the Saints on Wednesday with a crushing 5-1 result.

Joe Shaughnessy

opened the scoring for

St Mirren

in the 30th minute of their Wednesday match against

Dundee United

 and two penalties by

Jamie McGrath

ended the first half with a 3-0 win for the Saints. The Tangerines scored a goal in the 54th minute but they were punished by two more goals from

Dylan Connolly

and

Kristian Dennis

. In a post-match interview, Dundee United boss

Micky Mellon

has supported his players to bounce back from the heavy defeat and regain their form.

“We are a group that’s very new to this level,”

Mellon told

DUTV. “It’s not an excuse, we are, and now it’s up to me to keep moving them forward, with hard work.

“You make the players aware of the things they need to do better at and then you work with them, not against them. You work with them and you encourage them to improve because they are in the process of trying to move forward.

“We will keep attacking it and trying to get better all the time.”
