Roma was then knocked out by Liverpool despite winning 4-2 in the semi-final second leg, which was not enough to overturn the 5-2 victory in the first leg. To match Joao Pedro's unquestionable qualities, and without altering his own game plan too much, Di Francesco decided on a 4-2-3-1 initially.

While at first things were good, but later in the season, the team experienced a drop in their performances. The 4-2-3-1 saw a few breaks featuring a 3-5-1-1, which was used more in the course of the game (Di Francesco often changes tactical set-up during the course of matches). Later on, he was playing with 4-3-2-1 and after some new signings, Cagliari played with 3-4-2-1.

Reception

While during his playing days, Di Francesco was able to establish himself as one of the best midfielders of his generation and even got called up to the Italian national team, on his coaching career he has not yet been able to prove himself among the best.
