Club 

The first team he played in was Sporting CP and now we want to know about it.

Sporting CP 

Patricio was born in the Leiria hamlet of Regueira de Pontes and began his career as a striker. A Sporting CP scout was reportedly in the region and observed him play in goal, impressing him enough to sign him to the club's youth academy. He made his Primeira Liga debut on November 19, 2006, in a 1–0 away win against

in the tenth round: he stopped a penalty kick 15 minutes before the conclusion of the game, filling in for Ricardo, the club and country's first choice.

Following Ricardo's transfer to Real Betis in the 2007–08 season, Patricio defeated Sporting veteran Tiago and recruit Vladimir Stojkovi to become the undisputed starter. On November 27, 2007, he made his UEFA Champions League debut against

in a 1–2 group stage loss.

Patricio was the subject of a reported transfer to Italian giants Inter Milan during the 2008 off-season. However, nothing came of it, as he went on to block a Lucho González penalty in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira final against FC Porto in a 2–0 win, as well as being an ever-present fixture in the league.

Sporting was losing 0–1 in the 94th minute of the 2009–10 Champions League qualifying round at FC Twente, after a 0–0 tie in the first leg: Patricio sprinted to the opposition area for a corner kick, where he went up for a header with Nikita Rukavytsya. Both players appeared to make touch with the ball, which was then guided into the net by Peter Wisgerhof's boot for an own goal as the latter team qualified for the last games before the group stage.

Patricio was named Sporting's Footballer of the Year for the second year in a row on December 20, 2012. He saved a penalty by Jackson Martinez on October 18, 2014, with the score at 2–1 for his club, to help remove Porto from the Taca de Portugal with a 3–1 win at the Estadio do Drago.

Patricio was nominated for the 2016 Ballon d'Or award alongside Portugal teammates Pepe and

After the squad finished third in the league and missed out on Champions League qualification, Patricio and several of his teammates, including coaches, were injured in an attack by roughly 50 Sporting supporters at the club's training field on May 15, 2018. Despite the circumstances, he and the rest of the club consented to participate in the Portuguese Cup final the following weekend, in which they ultimately lost 2–1 against C.D. Aves. Patricio had the second-highest official game total in Sporting history, trailing only Hilario da Conceico with 467.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 

Patricio filed a request to terminate his Sporting contract with grounds for just cause on June 1, 2018, citing fan violence in the dressing room as well as the failure of an €18 million transfer to newly-promoted Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers after Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho pulled out at the last minute. On the 18th of June, he signed a four-year contract with the club, and on the 31st of October, it was revealed that both teams had agreed to pay an €18 million transfer fee as compensation for his departure to England.

Patricio chose the No.11 shirt for Wolves instead of his usual No.1 in commemoration of Carl Ikeme, who had recently retired after undergoing treatment for severe leukemia. On August 11, 2018, he made his league debut in a 2–2 home draw against

. As they finished seventh place and qualified for the Europa League in his first season, he maintained nine clean sheets, a club record.

Patricio had 13 clean sheets and only conceded 40 goals in 2019–20, compared to 46 the previous season. On the European stage, he was instrumental in the team's first continental quarter-final appearance since 1972.

Patricio signed a three-year contract with Italian club A.S. Roma on July 13, 2021. He made his debut in the first game under compatriot

Patricio began playing for the Portuguese under-21 team in 2007.

, the senior team coach, called him up for a 1–3 friendly defeat against Italy in Zürich on 29 January the following year, but he did not play; on 12 May, he was included in the squad for UEFA Euro 2008, although he did not play in the tournament.

Patricio was named to a backup list of six players for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, despite not being on the provisional 24-player list. On November 17, 2010, he made his professional debut, appearing in the second half of a 4–0 friendly win over Spain.

Patricio took over as the starter after Eduardo was demoted to the bench at his new club, S.L.

, and both players concluded the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with five games (450 minutes) as Portugal qualified for the final stages. In the championships in Poland and Ukraine, he was the starting goalkeeper, surrendering four goals in five games en route to a semi-final exit.

Patricio was named first-choice in Bento's 23-man team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and he made his debut in the tournament's opening match against Germany, which resulted in a 0–4 defeat. Due to injury, he was unable to play in the second game against the United States.

Following a 1–1 draw with Poland in the first 120 minutes at the Stade Velodrome, Patricio stopped Jakub Błaszczykowski's penalty shot in a 5–3 penalty shootout triumph that moved the side to the semi-finals. He was named to the roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after winning the event with a strong performance in the final. In a goalless draw with Italy in the UEFA Nations League on November 17 of that year, he captained the team for the first time.

Patricio earned his 81st cap in the 2019 UEFA Nations League Final against the Netherlands at the Estadio do Drago, overtaking Vitor Baia as the country's most capped goalkeeper. After securing a place in the postponed UEFA Euro 2020 in 2021, he reached 100 caps on October 12, 2021, in a 5–0 World Cup qualifying win over Luxembourg, becoming the seventh Portuguese player to reach the milestone.
