UEFA announces tributes plans for Turkey and Syria earthquake victims

UEFA will pay tribute to the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria at all of their club competition matches next week.

UEFA has confirmed a minute's silence will be observed before every fixture across UEFA's club competitions this week, including

Champions League

matches. A banner featuring the message, '

We are together with you

', will be displayed in Turkish and Arabic.

UEFA also confirmed on Monday that black armbands could be worn at the discretion of teams and referees.

European football's governing body announced on Friday that they have donated €150,000 to the Turkish Football Federation and the UEFA Foundation for Children also has committed €50,000 to the Bonyan Organization and Tiafi. These two non-governmental organisations are working on the frontlines of the disaster response in southern Turkey and Syria.

"UEFA is making this initial donation to help the immediate humanitarian response to this horrendous tragedy,"

said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin on Friday.

"I also want to thank our member associations for their quick and compassionate reaction and support offered to those affected by this terrible event.”

UEFA is also planning fund-raising activities during this season’s Champions League Final week, which will take place in Istanbul in June.

Hatayspor and Gaziantep, two Turkish clubs based in the region affected by the earthquake, have withdrawn from the Turkish Super Lig.

Turkish club Trabzonspor will face Basel in the first leg of their Europa Conference League knockout round play-off tie on Thursday. Istanbul Basaksehir and Sivasspor are also in this competition. Fenerbahce will play in the

Europa League

last 16 round.

To date, the 6 February earthquakes have claimed more than 33,000 lives.
