UEFA bans Russia to host Euro 2028 and extends ban on Russian teams
Russia has been banned from making a bid to host the men’s European championships in both 2028 and 2032.
UEFA on 28 February 2022 decided to suspend all
Russianrepresentative teams and clubs from participating in UEFA competition matches until further notice.
The UEFA Executive Committee today extended its ban on Russian teams competing in European competitions including the
Champions Leagueuntil at least the end of next season.
The ban of Russian clubs in European club competitions also extends to the
Europa League, Uefa Conference League, Women’s Champions League, and Uefa Youth League.
Portugal will replace Russia in the women’s Euros in England this summer. Russia will be absent in next season’s Uefa Nations League. They also can't participate in the 2023 Women’s World Cup qualifications round.
Russia was interested in rivaling the UK and Ireland for the right to host Euro 2028 or 2032 but their bid has been blocked by UEFA as part of their latest sanctions. Russia, Turkey, and Italy were bidding for Euro 2032.
The Champions League final for this season was originally due to be played in St Petersburg on May 28 but later was moved to Paris.
Russia and its clubs have been suspended by both the UEFA and FIFA since February following the invasion of Ukraine.
