Olunga missed the chance to win J-League title
The Kenya international could not help his side to overcome their rivals in a domestic cup contest.
Michael Olunga
and his teammates failed to take their only chance to win a trophy after
Kashiwa Reysol
were defeated 2-1 against
FC Tokyo
in a J-League Cup match on Monday.
Leandro
put FC Tokyo ahead on 16 minutes before Kashiwa Reysol leveled matters just before half-time.
Substitute
Adailton da Silva
scored the winning goal in the 74th minute for the away side.
If Kashiwa Reysol had won the title, it would have been a great year for Michael Olunga.
The former Gor Mahia forward, whose J. League-leading 28 goals saw him named the Most Valuable Player, explained how he was able to score during the season.
“It was a great season for me in 2020,”
Olunga stated.
“I was able to score a lot of goals. I would like to thank the people at Kashiwa Reysol for their support. I am very honored to be Kashiwa Reysol's first top scorer and the first African MVP.
“I hope that what I have achieved will have a positive impact on Japan and on the rest of the world.
“I hope that the J1 League will continue to have the best football in Asia and that more and more African players will play in it.”
